OBITUARY.
MR. JAMES ALLEN. A well-known landscape gardener and horticulturist, Mr. James Allen, died on April 11 at Gisborne, aged 95 years. Born near Edinburgh, Mr. Allen was at one time head gardener to the Earl of Dcnburgh. Colonel Feilding, brother of the earl, founded the town of Feilding and induced Mr. Allen to come to New Zealand in 1874. Later, Mr. Allen moved to Auckland, where he worked as a landscape gardener. For some years past he had lived -in retirement. . c mr!;.tom MARKWICK. Well-known formerly as chief steward of the Clansman and other steamers of the Northern Steamship Company, Mr. T. Markwick died on April 11, aged 76 years. He was born in Surrey, England, and his parents went to Capetown. Later Mr. T. Markwick went to Sydney, and from there came to Auckland, entering the service of the Northern Steamship Company. During the mining boom of 1896, Mr. Markwick was chief steward of the Wakatere, on the Thames run. He was afterwards in business in the city. He is survived by Mrs. Markwick, and the following children: Mr. T. W. Markwick, of Balmoral; and Mr. H. Markwick, of Northcotc; and one daughter, Mrs. W. Laird, of Morningside.
