LOWEST MAJORITY.
Conservatives "Vote Against
The Government.
INDIA COMMITTEE PERSONNEL,
(Received 12.30 p.m.)
LONDON, April 10.
The Government's majority fell to the lowest since it came into office on a "diehard" amendment seeking to exclude four members of the Ministry from the House of Commons members on the Joint Committee on India.
Colonel Crookshank (Con., Bootle), Mr. Churchill, and Sir Henry Page-Croft and their supporters claimed that Ministerial policy would be too strongly represented on the committee, and would prevent impartiality. The amendment was defeated by 200 votes to 118, the minority including 80 Conservatives in response to a special "diehard" whip.
A further series of "diehard" amendments was rejected and the appointment of the committeemen as published was carried without a division.
