IN THE PUBLIC MIND.

NEW. ZEALAND CONDITIONS,

CANDID CRITICISM NEEDED.

(To the Editor.)

I wonder if any Intelligent visitor to this country who has travelled extensively and, has been at least six months in New Zealand will really give us his opinion on the country, the scenery, the people and anything else that he has to comment on. Departing guests are overdoing the more English than English stunt, the beauty of our scenery, the replica of English scenery—piffle, our New Zealand scenery stands on its own dignity—our wonderful hospitality, our wonderful people, our wonderful this and that. Our sensitiveness has been tickled with this fulsome feather far too long. We know we have a wonderful climate, we know that we have a wonderful land, we know this is God's own country, but please let someone come along and tell us where we err, if we do err at all, let us know where we fail, our defects, and some of tha tilings we should know, if there is anything we should know. I am quite sure the wellbalanced opinion of an observant visitor would be quite refreshing and interesting. It may give some of us, perhaps, food for thought, might even offend, but would be a corrective to °the overdose of nonsense with which we have lately been regaled. A.F.
