CHEAP POULTRY.

SHABP RISE IN EGGS,

BANANAS FIRM IN PRICE

Owing to Good Friday falling this week, Thursday will be the main sale day, and on Saturday morning further auctions will be held.

Ripe bananas are in short supply, with the result that higher prices ruled for this fruit. Tomatoes are not so plentiful, and better figures were offered for lines that did come to hand. Apples are coming in freely, the market being still oversupplied with second grade fruit, such lines being now hard to quit. Dessert pears meet with good inquiry, and larger quantities of mushrooms were sent in this week.

Quotations are:—Apples: Delicious, 1/6 to 3/6 per case; Spys, 2/ to 4/6; Ballarat, 3/ to 4/6; Munro, 2/ to 3/; Jonathan, 3/ to 5/; rejects and others, 1/ to 2/. Pears: Louis Bon of Jersey, 8/ to 9/6; Keiffer, 2/9 to 4/; Beurre Bosc, 3/6 to 4/6: Cole, 8/ to 9/; others, 2/ to 2/9. Passion fruit: 2/6 to 4/6. Persimmons: 2/ to 2/6. Egg fruit: 1/3 to 2/. Oranges: Fiji, 10/ to 15/; Rarotongan, 20/ to 25/; Californian, 35/ to 40/. Mandarins: Fiji, 10/ to 18/. Grapefruit: Californian, 40/. Tomatoes: Extra choice, 4/6 to 5/6; others, 2/ to 4/. Bananas: Choice, 27/6; No. 2 and medium, 18/ to 27/. Tree tomatoes: 3/ to 4/6 case. Cape gooseberries: 3d to 3%d lb. Quinces: 6/ to 9/ case. Lemons: 6/ to 14/. Grapes: Te Kauwhata, 5/6 to 8/ case; hothouse, choice, 1/6 to 1/9 lb; Hamburgh, 9d lb; others, 9d to 1/3 lb.

Vegetables. A fair demand exists for good sound potatoes, and prices ruled from 2/ to 3/3 per bag on Monday. Pumpkins and kumaras continue in heavy supply, and meet with little demand. Cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce and green peas sell well. Onions are coming forward in excess of the requirements of this market.

Quotations are:—Potatoes, 2/ to 3/ per bag; swedes, 1/ to 2/ bag; onions, 1/6 to 2/3 bag; kumaras, 1/ to 2/ lb; cabbages, 4/ to 6/6 sack; cabbages on benches, 2/ to 4/ dozen; cauliflowers, 5/ to 7/6 sack; cauliflowers on benches, 3/ to 4/6 dozen; pumpkins, 2/ to 5/6 cwt; cucumbers, 2/6 to 4/ dozen; carrots, 4d to 8d dozen, parsnips, 6d dozen; beet, 6d to 8d dozen; turnips, 3d to 6d dozen; spring onions, 4d to 8d bundle; spinach, 6d to 8d dozen; leeks, 2d to 3d bundle; green peas, 4/ to 7/ bag; French bean?, 1/ to 2/6 bag. marrows, 1/6 to 3/ per dozen; melons, citron, 3d to 6d each; lettuce, 1/ to 4/6 case; celery, cooking, 6d to 1/3 bundle; celery, dessert, 1/9 to 2/ bundle; rhubarb, 9d to 1/6 dozen.

Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was heavy and the demand was poor. The prices paid were i very poor, most lines being down in price. Selling rates were as follow: —Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/ to 3/6 each; not prime, 1/ upwards; light breeds, prime, 1/6 to 2/; not prime, 6d upwards. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 1/3 to 1/9; light breeds, 9d to 1/3. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 1/3 to 1/9; light breeds, 9d to 1/3. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/ to 5/; smaller, 1/ upwards; light breeds, best, 3/ to 5/; smaller, 1/ upwards. Drakes: Young, prime, 1/3 to 1/9: smaller, 1/ upwards. Ducks: Younpr, 1/6 to 2/6; old, 1/ to 1/6. Drakes: Old, 1/ to 1/6. Geese: 3/ to 3/6. Turkey hens: 3/ to 4/. Gobblers: 5/6 to 8/6.

Another Advance In Eggs. The price of eggs has again advanced for both hen and duck, as supplies have been under the requirements of the market. Quotations are:—First grade hen eggs, 2/ per dozen; B grade, 1/9; C grade, 1/5. First grade duck eggs, 1/10 per dozen. B grade, 1/8; C grade, 1/5.
