LAWN TENNIS.

DEVONPORT PRIVATE CLUBS, ASSOCIATION'S ACTIVITIES. Previous to the opening of this tennis season, a meeting was convened by the present chairman of the Devonport Private Tennis Clubs' Association (Mr. Osmers), asking several private tennis clubs, to form an association. The response was veryencouraging, as ell clubs present, numbering eleven, signified their willingness to join, after the convener had outlined the aims and objects for which the meeting had been called. A general committee was constituted, each club having a representative thereon, as well ,as the sub-com-mittees for drawing up fixtures and rules for inter-club matches and tournaments. The season began with these eleven clubs affiliated, with a total membership of 300 players. They were divided into" A and B grades, and during the esason some very evenly and keenly contested 'matches were played. The semi-finals and finals of. the inter-club matches aroused considerable interest on the North Shore. The Rangi Club won both, .the A and B grade championships. : Also during the season was held a singles championship tournament for A and B Rrade players. Eighty-five and 95 competitors entered in the respective grades. The finals of "the singles tournament resulted :— Ladies. —A grade: Miss K. Bonner heat Miss D. Chetwyne, 6—3, 6—3. B grade : Miss R. Chetwyne beat Miss Huckstep, 7 5 6—2. Men —A grade: J. Mills beat J. Lynch, 7__s, 6—2. B grade: D. Lithgow heat S. Ferguson, 3—6, ts—l, 6- —4. "Referring to the publication in your Sports- Edition of March of a letter over the nom de plume of Hard Court, deali*g with the final matches played in connection with the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's competitions played at Stanley Street on March 18, the. matter has been placed before the management committee of the club, and the following motion unanimously passed: 'That this meeting or the management committee of the Unity Tennis Club disassociates itself from the sentiments expressed by a correspondent m the "Star'.' _Sports Edition of Saturday, March 25. • Further, tlmt .the Unity Club affirms its loyalty and support to the Auckland Tennis Association and. its officers. CHURCHES' ASSOCIATION. An etijovablc evening was spent at the Clive Road Night Courts, when the president of the Churches' Tennis Association, Mr. A. 11. Smith, presented the various trophies for the season just closed. The winners were: A grade shield, Mount Albert Presbyterian ; B grade Spalding Cup, Pitt Street Methodist. _ Singles Competitions.—A grade men, H. Wintle; B grade men, J. Andrews; B grade ladies, Miss E. Anderson. The winners for the evening's progressive tournament wetc: Miss Evans and Mr. Green.

TAIHAPE SEASON'S WINNERS. The Taihape Lawn Tennis Club officially closed its season on Saturday. Competition winners were;— Singles. — Championship:'. Men, N. Lelievre; ladies, Miss B. Cleaver. Handicaps : " Men, li." C. Hawk ; ladies, Miss M. Couper. ? Men's Doubles. — Championship: N. Lelievre and F. J. Sexton. Handicap: F. J. Sexton and H. A. Darvill. > Ladies' Doubles.—Championship : Misses M. Couper and R. Casey. Handicap: Misses M. Perrett and E. Welch. Combined Doubles.—Championship : Miss I. Anderson and W. Casey. Handicap: Miss H. Dickinson and F. H. Bray. Junior Championship.—Men.: C. Keats. Ladles : Miss M. Fookes.
