WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

BUCKLAND. A large gathering •of members met for the April meeting, when Mr. Salmond, of Bombay, gave an interesting talk on the home and women's influence in the world. Mrs. Harper demonstrated how to do raffia work. The competition was a musical one, and was won by Mrs. Osmond. The roll call was "Limericks." KUMETJ. Mrs. Milligan, the president, presided over the monthly meeting} when it was unanimously carried that "this institute strongly supports the effort to establish a rest homo for tired country women within tram ear distance of Auckland." In these times of stress and worry the home would be a wonderful boon to' hundreds of women who otherwise cannot have a rest and chauge. Mrs. Girveu gave_ au interesting demonstration in the making and oijing of coats made from unbleached calico and also supplied patterns to members. It was decided to enter for the thrift competition at the biennial conference in May; also to enter a court at the Auckland Winter Show. An amusing competition, arranged by Mrs. Milligan, was held, and won by Mrs. Douglas Hill. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames MeCall, Bockman, A. Pearman and Robinson. The trading table did good business under Mrs. Mcllardy.

WHAKATANE. The Whakatane Women's Institute held its monthly meeting in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, there being a large attendance of members present. "1110 meeting opened with the reading of the Institute Creed. Mrs. Donelly outlined A. A. Milne's works on child life and gave a splendid interpretation of one of his poems. Mrs. Barry sang. The competition for a thrift article made from any waste material brought to view some fine specimens of handcraft. The roll call, "Useful household hints," gave some useful information. A demonstration of picture making from coloured chocolate covers was given hy Mrs. V. Stewart. The hostesses for the afternoon were Me6dames Bridger, Baker, Buddie, and Boon. BAY OF PLENTY. There was a record attendance at the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Federation of Women's Institutes, delegates being present from the following institutes:—Paerata Ridge, Mrs. Frazer and Mrs. Jcffery; Papamoa, Mrs. Reid and Mrs. Collins; Matata, Mrs. Flannery and Mrs. Smith; Whakatane, Mrs. Guest and Mrs. Garaway; Woodlands, Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Dodgson; Te Puke, Mrs. Mutton and Mrs. Gemming; Paengaroa, Mrs. Hickson and Mrs. Mailman; Tauranga, Mrs. Faulkner and Mrs. Castles; Wliakamaramara, Mrs. Sharplin and Mrs. Phillips; Hairini-Welcome Bay, Mrs. Rowsell and Mrs. Nell; Mount Maunganui, Mrs. Pemberton and Mrs. Petterson; Omokoroa, Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Kirk; Waiotahi, Mrs. Fryer and Mrs. Gibbs; Manawahe, Mrs. Meredith, and Mrs. Rendall; WaimanaNukuhou, Mrs. Jerram and Mrs. Savage; Taneatua, Mrs. Santon and Mrs. Varley; Otakiri, Mrs. Hampton and Mrs. Rutherford; Otara, Mrs. Morice and Mrs. McMillan; Edgecumbe, Mrs. Snelling and Mrs. Mussett; Opotiki, Mrs. Main and Mrs. Dawson. The president, Mrs. Withy, in her address, referred to the wonderful growth, of the movement, and stated there were 562 institutes in the Dominion, with a membership of 30,000. She felt sure the institutes were doing a great deal of good. A number of remits were brought forward, but only one was carried, this being as follows: "That films suitable for children be shown at Saturday matinees." The election of the new executive resulted as follows: —Mesdames Withy (president), McPherson, G. Vanstone, Stewart, Debreceny, S. White, C. White, Wylde, Varley and Jones. The present organisers, Mesdames Debreceny, Jones and McNaughton, retain office until 1934. In the potato growing competition, the shield was won by the Waimana Institute, with a total yield of 1761b.
