The Kohimarama W.C.T.U. ]icld a meeting tliis week, when Mrs. C. Perkins presided. Mrs. Clara Neal, Dominion superintendent for scientific medical temperance, gave an instructive address. Mesdames Johnson and Carl Kasper'were the hostesses for the afternoon. « * * • An interesting afternoon of . reading original work waa held at the Writers' Club rooms on Friday, the subject being "A Bright Sketch." Those members who contributed work were Mesdames ScottYoung, Doust, Richmond, F. C. Soar, Fisher, Gilbert, Land, Misses Hart-Smith, Good and Parkinson. Mrs. Cluett, the president, was in the chair. * * # • An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the Mothers' Club, Y.W.C.A., when Mrs. Edwards presided. Mrs. Moller gave an interesting talk on "Music," and several items were given by the Higher Thought Temple Orchestra. Mrs. Moller and her colleagues were thanked by the president, on behalf of the members. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Clark, Yallop, and Woolnougli. * ♦. * * ° The Thames Girls' Club held their first "At Home" for this season on Wednesday in the Druids' Hall. A large gathering of members and friends was present.. Dancing was enjoyed. Members of the. Qommittee present were: Mesdames McGregor (president), Cordes, Davison,. Wright, Nicholls, Stubbing, Gribble, Mclntyre, McGeehan, Andrews, McPherson and Misses Aitken and McGregor, • • The March meeting of the Dominion Road branch of the League of Mothers was held recently in the Methodist Social Hall, when Mrs. Barnes presided Over a gooij attendance of members. Mrs. Hamilton gave the thought for the month, a short poem entitled "Why Worry?" The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Steele, who gave a description of a motor tour through England and Wales. At the conclusion afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Anderson, Blair and Creeks. * * » * Mrs. Adams, of Ellerslie, gave a farewell tea to her friends in the Tudor room of Milne and C-hoyce yesterday afternoon. Miss Adams is leaving Auckland shortly to join her relatives in England. The tables were beautifully decorated with shaded dahlias. Miss Adams received in a dark blue and white chequered frock, and dark green coat and toque to match. Among those present were: Mesdames Fred Ripley, Field, Harris, Clark, Stewart, Still, C. Adams, J. Adams. * * * •

A successful "At Home" was held by the ladies' committee of the Grafton Tennis Club on their lawns on Thursday afternoon in perfect weather. The prize-winners were Mrs. Bone and Miss Drake, Miss W. Todd and Miss S. Law. Among those present were Mesdames Robson, Henry, Hardy, Martelli, Bone, Johns, Burd, Miller, Dillner, Misses Patterson, Arey, Melsop, Drake, Law, O'Brien, W. Todd, Rowley, Fox, Lowe, Chapman, Harty, R. Todd, Campbell, 0. Hardie Neil, C. Stubbs, M. Tracy Inglis, R. Watson, B. Neale.

An afternoon tea was given in the Tudor room of Milne and Choyce yesterday by Mrs. J, S. Geddis, of Takapuna, in honour of Miss Ina Weston. The tables were attractively decorated in golden flowers and autumn tints. Mrs. Geddis received her guests in a becoming frock of dark blue crepe do chine, with shading hat to tone. The Bayswater - Belmont Women's Society held its monthly meeting at the clubhouse, Bayswater. Mrs. B. Francis (vice-president) presided. It was announced that £14 had been donated to the Plunket Society. The speaker for the afternoon was the Rev. Monckton, who spoko on "China and Japan" and the causes producing the present conditions of unrest. Among those present were: Mesdames Francis, L. L. Rabbidge, W.i G. Thomas, T. Reid, Park, M. Blampied, Waddell, Proude, Deacon, H. Bach, Rambaud, Powell, Braund, A. Gyde, Mackay, Kirby, Eekett, Easson, Mac Duff, Misses Stares, Falkncr, Edminston.

Tho St. Helier's Bay branch of the Literary and Dramatic Club held a successful flannel dance in tho Parish Hall, St. Helier's Bay, last evening. The hall was gaily festooned with coloured streamers, and appropriate music was played by the St. John Ambulance Orchestra. Among those present were: Mesdames F. Webster, F Hume, H. Smith, Liddle, P. Williams, D. Wrathall, Gandy, Turner, L. King, R. Bowler, Taylor, S. Wrathall, Collings, Roberts, Misses D. Kerr, B. Cahill, P. Hayes, Armstrong, M. Smith, F. Shoebridge, J. Roberts, B. Leith; P. Wilcox, N. Parker, 11. Burrell, M. Roberts, N. Hoyte, P. Holloway, Y. Browning, M. Hansen, N. Robinson, J. Robinson, and B. Hoyte.

The Birkenhead branch of the W.C.T.U. meeting in the Methodist Church schoolroom was presided over by Mrs. Brocklehurst, and Mrs. Todd led the devotions. It was unanimously carried that Mrs. Todd, who had been president of the branch for some years, be elected a vice-president for life. The president gave a short address, an Easter message to women on the part they played at the first Easter, dealing with the command "Go and tell." The speaker urged all members to find a place for each to work in. Women were a power in the world to-day. Woman's first place was her home, and then anywhere where she could do the most good.

The monthly meeting of the Ponsonby branch of the League of Mothers was held this week, when Mrs. English presided over a well-attended meeting. Mr. Rac, principal of tho Training College, gave an instructive address on "Education," stressing the importance of the co-operation of home and school in the training of the child. Mr. Rao spoke of tho habits, instincts, emotions and sentiments of the child. The ideas of the modern school are the forming of character, to educate for life and not school only, and individuality and its expression. Six lectures to parents are to be given shortly, and should help towards tho co-operation of parents and teachers. During the afternoon Mrs. Howard gave two vocal solos. Mrs. Hall gave the thought for the month.

A social by the Northcote Returned Soldiers' Association Club was held last Wednesday evening in the club's rooms. The Mayor, Mr. W. C. Cater, president of the club, presided. The first part of the programme was rendered by the pupils of Mrs. B. Mayall and included a pianoforte solo by Miss Patty Oldbury, and a playlet by Misses V. Faulkner, Betty Watson, Edith Pengelly, and May Davidson; humorous song, Miss Betty Watson; dance, little "Billy" Hurley; and hornpipe by the pupils. Items on the guitar and mouth organ were played by Mr. H. Nicholson, jun. After supper had been served further items were rendered. The Northcote R.S.A. Club quartet, consisting of Messrs. C. Duke, F. Swinbank, R. McGhie, H. Cosnett, made their first appearance and their items were loudly applauded! Songs were also rendered by Mr. Roberts.

A successful and enjoyable evening was held at the St. John Ambulance Hall, Rutland Street, on Wednesday, when Mrs. C. Webber, convener and divisional superintendent of the National Reserve of the Nursing Division, received in a becoming gown of green georgette, with black trimmings. The hall had Oriental scenery as a background and was decorated with red and white flowers and flags. Stationary bridge was enjoyed, the prizes being won by: First, Mrs. Maxwell; second, Mrs. Carney; first, Mr. C. Wilson; second,' Mr. Sample. A social committee provided refreshments, so that no expenses were entailed, and the function was a great success financially. The following k a list of the hostesses: Mesdames Plumber, Abbott, C. A delightful social gathering was held in the drawing room of the Grand Hotel yesterday afternoon, when Mr. F. W. Doidge entertained former colleagues •of the Press and old friends before his departure for Home to resume his activities in the newspaper world. The room had been tastefully decorated with fine piak dahlias and ferns. Mrs. Doidge, who assisted her husband, was charmingly gowned in an early spring Paris model frock, which was made of floral thick crinkle crepe cut on the cross and moulded to the form in a very graceful manner. It also had the new full elbow sleeves, which are really charming. Mrs. Doidge also wore a wide hat, simply trimmed. With her were her mother, Mrs. H. S. Clark, wearing coffee brown crepe, her sister, Mrs. R. H. Stables, who was in navy crepe, Mrs. H. Doidge, black suit, and Miss Barbara Doidge, in jade green. Amongst the ladies present were: Mrs. R. A. Kenner, coffee ensemble; Mrs. A. Bullock, pale beige crepe; Mrs. C. W. Whitaker, black suit; Mrs. John Dreadon, light beige; Miss Whitaker, red; Miss Farquhar, embroidered coat; Mrs. H. J. Wilson, dark red wrap; Miss Soloman, brown; Mrs. Newton, brown fur wrap; Mrs. A. Jones, black suit; Miss Rona Jones, black and white; Miss H. Jones, brown fur coat. Mr. and Mrs. Doidge leave for Wellington to-morrow evening to join the Eangitane, sailing for London on Thursday.
