OFFER BY CITY.

SUPPLY FROM' WAITAKERES. LOWER PRICE WANTED. A suggestion from the Auckland City Council that the North Shore boroughs should be supplied with water from the Waitakere Ranges was discussed at a meeting of the North Shore Water Board yesterday afternoon.

Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, of Devonport, chairman of the board, said the City Council had instructed its Public Services committee to negotiate ' with the board, and a letter bearing on the matter had been received. The letter was discussed in committee.

Later it was stated that the City Council had offered to deliver water at the Birkenhead reservoir at 1/4 per 1000 gallons, the rate to be reduced to 1/3 if the board took 1,000,000 gallons or more a day.

It was decided to refer the matter back to the council, stating that the price was higher than had been expected, and asking that the council reconsider it. It was also decided to inform the council that the board had received a lower offer from another-source. The board accepted the offer of Mr, G. Mills, Mayor of Birkenhead, to inspect Lignite Stream, one proposed source of supply for the North Shore. City Council's Plan. If the Auckland City Council supplied the Birkenhead reservoir, the waterworks department would have to construct a pipe line of about 15 miles, assuming that the water would be drawn from the Waitakere niters. The pipe line would follow the road to Hobsonville, where a good crossing could be obtained at one of the narrowest parts of the Waitemata Harbour. The crossing would be about two miles from the Birkenhead reservoir.

When fixing the price of the water, the City Council, would have to provide for the interest and sinking fund on the capital invested in the pipe line and would no doubt ask the North Shore Water Board to enter into an agreement for a term of years covering the period of the loan required. It would probably take eight or nine months to construct the fiipe' line.
