"BETTER THAN EAST YEAR."
"The position revealed is very satisfactory* considering the circumstances, said Mr. R. R. Hayman at the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening about a report prepared by the the town clerk showing estimates against expenditure for the year ended March 31. The town clerk, Mr. H. Kemp, eaid that there would be a debit revealed in the balance-sheet, but smaller than had been allowed for. While some accounts had been overspent, the main accounts, sucli as Wages, were within the estimates. Generally speaking, he said, the council was better off than last year. "Economies have been effected," he eaid, "which I would never have thought possible." Appended are figures for some of the accounts, with the estimates in parentheses: Wages, £954 (£1200); metal, pipes, etc., £464 ( £500); motor lorries, £1)87 ( £700); street lighting, £405 ( £450); office salaries, £294 ( £280); legal and audit, £226 ( £120); , bank overdraft and interest £2.06 (£300). The district fund balance at the bank was a credit of i!&7. This was offset By interest overdue to " the State Advances Department of £1242.
