EFFECT ON THE RATES.

"From the evidence given at the Assessment Court there appear to be no stable values in Auckland," said Mr. P. F. Notley this morning. "As city Taluer, all I can do is to try to keep values in uniformity as iar as possible, so that one section of ratepayers will not he penalised by another section lodging objections.

"The only surprises were the remarkably low values placed on properties by some of the agents who gave evidence. When the same people were selling properties a few years ago they had a very different story to tell. Valuers and owners, in objecting, stress all the bad features—features they keep in the ■background when they are selling."

Mr. Notley said he had not had time yet to analyse the figures in order to determine what the total reductions amounted to, but when he did so and reported to the council it would be a matter of policy whether the rates ehould be increased to bring in the loss in revenue that the reductions represented, or whether there should be further economies.
