QUOTA FAVOURED.

BIG RISE IN PRODUCTION. "SOMETHING OF A GAMBLE." (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, tlite day. In supporting the export restriction proposals, a well-known authority said the British market, which was practically the only outlet for Xew Zealand's exportable surplus, had now reached saturation point. Imports into Britain during the last nine years had increased by nearly 06 per cent. For the year ended June 30, MJ24, they were 24*0,115 tons, and for the year ended June 30, 103-2, they totalled 412,863 tons. Taking the aggregate imports into Britain for the nine years, New Zealand'e shave •wae 21.72 'per cent.- For the year 1931-32 it was 25.05 per cent. New Zealand's production of butter had grown enormously during the last ten years. For the year 1923-24 the gradings of butter were 01.S00 tons, in 1929-30 they were 9.">,344 tons, and in 1931-32 they had increased to 104.211 tons. This' year butter gradings were likely, on present figures, to reach 123,000 tons, or more than double the quantity of ten years ago. The present season was proving a phenomenal one from a production point, of view. Production was holding "I 1 astonishingly, and next year, with similar weather conditions and an in-CToa.-cd number of cows coming into profit, the increase would be even greater. On the. other hand, the abnormally good seasons experienced in Australia during the Is-*t three years or more were scarcely likely to continue. There were those who believed that Australia might, next year, be faced with a dry seafion. For t'lis reason, which admittedly was something of a gamble, Xew Zealand should go into the restriction scheme, subject tr> the prov'eo that in the event of a falling off in Australian ivoduction from adverse climatic conditions the Dominion should be allowed to make up any deficiency in the quota.
