CALM AND CHAOS.
(By Elsa Flavell, P.O. Box 313, Hawera.) Chaos and darkness o'er the earth are spread, And through the night the wild winds storm and rave; The sea resounds with thund'rous roar, and high The tumult is of every breaking wave. The demons of the air are all set loose, And with their shriekings loud the earth affright; The bending groans of trees and sigh of boughs, Noise and chaotic motion fill the night. Yet, far above, the tranquil sky is clear, The crescent moon hangs low above a hill; No breath of sound or hint of motion there; Glimmer the glorious stars, and all is still. Faint little puffs of pearly clouds surround The golden-haloed moon; and fair, serene, The deep blue sky, with all its scattered stars, Above the turbulence of earth is Been.
