SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A pleasant day was; spent on the Rawhiti croquet ]awh on Wednesday last, when Mrs. Stubbs, president, entertained members and friends. Progressive croquet and competitions .were enjoyed. The winners of progressive croquet were:—Mrs. Ravenhall A, Mrs. Ormerod B; runner-up, Mrs. Theyers A, Mrs. Bust B. Hidden number, Mrs. Gibson.

At the invitation of the minister and congregation, Captain and Mrs. Corbett : Scott will go to Pukekohe on Wednesday, April 5, to be present at the celebrations which have been ' arranged to ' commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the opening of the East # Pukekohe Church, where the Governor, Sir Charles Fergusson, unveiled a memorial to Captain Scott and the others who defended the church during the Maori War. Captain Scott will be 95 on April 15.

The associate branch of the National Council of Women met for their annual meeting yesterday at the clubrooms, Victoria Street, when the results of the election were: President, Mrs. Mary Dreaver; hon. see., Miss M. H. Baggett. A short talk on the necessity of a resident anaesthetist at St. Helens.Hospitals was given by Mrs. F. J. Hutchinson, and an interesting discussion took place, the following ladies taking part: Mesdames Turner, Hankins, O'Neill, Heath, Priest, Amos, Hughes, Terry and Miss McDonald. Afternoon tea was served and several new members enrolled.

. A farewell evening was given to Miss Ivy Copeland yesterday by the working members of the Society of Arts in their club rooms, Victoria Arcade. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Wadham, president of the Sketch Club. Miss Copeland has been on the committee of this club since it was formed, and has also been a member of the council of the Auckland Society of Arts for the past nine years. She is leaving Auckland for the purpose of taking a position on the staff of the School of Arts, Canterbury College, Christchurch. During the evening Miss Copeland gave a short talk on composition, and practical demonstration of the arrangements of objects in painting.

Mrs. G. Arthur, of Gardner Road, Epsom, entertained a number of friends at a combined farewell and birthday party on Saturday evening. Dancing and games were engaged in, tlie prizes for the Monte Carlo being won by Miss Mario Chaney and Mr. E. Arthur, and the guessing competitions by Miss Lorna Bryce and Miss Marie Chaney. Mrs. Arthur received her guests in black georgette. The guests of honour were Mrs. Miller, of Melbourne (sister of Mr. G. Arthur) and Mr. Aired Arthur, who was celebrating his nineteenth birthday. Among the guests present were:—Mesdames McCathy, Miller, M. Arthur, Haslit, Boyer, Almond, Weeks, Bryce, Chaney, Misses McCathy, Jean McLaren, Lorna Bryce and M. Chaney. During the evening Mrs. McCathy delighted the guests with a piano solo and song.

The opening function of the Ponsonby and Curran Street School Parents' Association was a bridge and 500 evening held at the school. It was largely attended by the parents and friends of the children. The ladies' committee was: Mesdames Alexander Follick (convener), G. T. McLeod, Wilson, Bell Booth, Boyle, Gunsler, Bowden, McKinnon, Delgrosso, Bigelow. The Ex-Service. Women's Association held a successful bridge party in the rooms kindly lent by the Officers' Club, Queen's Arcade, last evening, in aid of ex-Service men's families. Mrs. Dick, vice-president, who wore a gown of floral ninon, with cherry trimming, received in- the absence of Mrs. Chalmers, president, who was unable through illness to attend. Members of the committee present included: Mrs. Dick, Mrs. Michaels, Mrs. Webster, Mrs. Teape (vice-presidents), Miss Luxford (treasurer), Miss Ernest (secretary), Mrs. A. C.
