RUNAWAY TRAIN.
THE DRIVER KILLED. LEAPT RAILS INTO GULLY. BRAKES FAIL TO ACT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NGARUAWAHIA, this day. A married man employed as an engine driver by the Wilton Collieries, Mr. William McLean, agec". So, was killed instantly about half-past nine this morning when a train which had got out of control at the mine leapt the rails at a sharp bend near Windy Point. The fireman, Mr. J. dimming, wae not on the train when it broke away. The train, made up of six wagons, wae being shunted up an incline to maka up a load for Ngaruawahia. When the engine brakes failed to hold, the train quickly gathered speed and raced through the township of Glenmaesey. . After continuing for nearly three miles, the train left the rails at a sharp bend near Windy Point and fell into a gully. The wagcyis piled up on top< of each other. The engine, which came to rest in a creek, was badly smashed. Deceased, who was the father of five children and lived at Hamilton, had his back, arms and legs broken.
