WATER SEEPAGE.

MT. EDEN RESERVOIR. SLIGHT CRACK IN WALL ONE COMPARTMENT EMPTIED. Seepage from the reservoir on Mount Eden has been traced to a crack in the eastern wall extending .from the floor to a distance, of about 9ft up. Since the eeepage -was first noticed last week on the. eastern side of the mountain one of the three compartments of the reservoir , has been drained, and yesterday it was inspected. Residents on the eastern side were alarmed last evening at hearing rushing water which was being drained off into i the valley. | This morning the city engineer, Mr. J. [ Tyler, the city waterworks engineer, Mr. j A'. D. Mead, "and other officials made a , detailed inspection of the interior of the j emptied compartment. "We found a | slight construction crack in the eastern j wall," said Mr Tyler. "It is wide enough I to admit a pen-knife blade. It is difficult to say the cause. It may have been the opening of the binding concrete, it may have resulted from the setting of the concrete, or it may be due to temperature changes. Similar defects are seen in every big concrete' structure..but as far as the reservoir is concerned the crack does not in any way affect the stability of the work. "The closing of the one compartment of the reservoir does not in any way affect the supply or the pressure,' said Mr. Tyler. "When the structure was built we took the precaution of dividing it into three separate units, so that any one or two could be closed at the one'time without affecting the city Bflnnly of water." Mr.' Tyler said that it was not a difficult task to remedy the defect. The wall would be chinpert out a lons the lencrth of the crack and it would thtn be seale-1 With mastic compound and plastered over. That was the remedy frequently used in such cases. The work would not take long, and as that compartment was due for a clean out both jobs could be done 'at the one time.
