TEST DRAWN.

DEPRESSING CRICKET. SOU-WESTER HOLDS UP GAME. ABANDONED IN FINE WEATHER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. After disappointing, even depressing days of cricket with even a more unsatisfactory ending, the first Test match between England and New Zealand resulted in a draw, very much in favour of England, The weather in the morning and until the afternoon was perfect. About 3.15 p.m. heavy clouds banked in the south-west and the wind rese, blowing in gusts of gale force and raking dense clouds of dust. It was almost impossible to distinguish players, and it wae decided to take the tea adjournment at 3.30. On resuming the wind was worse, and newspapers in hundreds blsw across the ground, with hats ffying in all directions. Another adjournment was made and as rain began to fall, with a threat of a downpour, the wicket was covered with tarpaulins. Little rain fell, however, but as the people had practically all ieft the ground, play, was abandoned. Afterwards, in the space of a few minutes only, the wind dropped and there was beautiful, clear weather. Play could easily have been continued until nearly six o'clock. The attendance was about 5000. After the luncheon adjournment, when Xew Zealand's score was 196 for five wickets, Smith and Page carried on. Two hundred was reached after 270 minutes' play, which was very slow scoring. Page repeated Kerr's mistake by cutting a ball from Allen to A r oce at third man. 205—6—22. Newman followed and began streakily. However, he outstayed Smith, who was clean bowled by Tate. 211—7—4. Freeman scored a single off Tatc, faced Voce, and was bowled. 212—8—1. Badcock, whose finger was broken late on Friday afternoon, was low on the batting liet in consequence. Although his hand was painful he batted confidently and scored ten before Newman was bowled. Vivian's injured leg made him unable to bat and the innings closed for 223. New Zealand followed on and Dempster and Whitelaw opened. All the bowlers were tried, including Hammond, but the batsmen withstood the attack and the score was 35 for no wickets when play was abandoned. Scores: — ENGLAND.
