SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The residents of Huia tendered a farewell social in the schoolroom to Mrs. Harrison and family, who are leaving the district to live at Glen Eden. Tributes to their work at Huia for 13 years past were paid by Messrs. Colin Hinge and George R. Stacpoole, headmaster of Huia School. Mr. Godfrey Harrison replied for his mother, brothere and sisters.

The members of the Stanley Bay Croquet Club held a social afternoon and progressive croquet at the residence of Mrs. W. Airey yesterday. The reception rooms were arranged and decorated most artistically, ami Mrs. Airey was frocked in floral silk voile, and was assisted by members of the club. Competitions were indulged in and prizes won by Mrs. W. Wyatt, Mrs. Cooper and Miss G. Duder.

At the monthly meeting of the women's division of Elstow the roll call "General Hints," was answered by every member. A demonstration of lamp shade making by Miss E. Strange proved interesting, and it was decided to ask the committee to arrange a competition for lamp shades at the end of the winter. A competition for an article made from a sugar bag was won by Miss E. Strange, with Mrs. F. Flowerday second.

The Mercury Bay Labour party had a splendid attendance at their social dance and 500 evening at Whitianga. Mr. Audrie Smith sang, and a Monte Carlo was won by Miss A. Munro and Mr. J. Taylor, who also carried off the waltzing competition. The alphabet waltz was won by Miss H. Wells and Mr. Denize, a statue fox trot was won by Miss J. Jackman and Mr. R. Alison. At 500 the winners were Mrs. Topp and Mrs. Johnson, the consolations falling to Mrs. Blade and Mr. McLaren.

On Saturday last the Otahuhu Old Time Dance Club continued their series of old-time dances in the Public Hall. The popularity of old-time dancing was fully illustrated by the number of encores demanded. The prize-winners for the first Monte Carlo were Mrs. Markwick and Mr. Parkes, the second being won by Miss L. Craig and Mr. Smart. The supper tables were tastefully decorated in the supper room, and served by Mesdames Dixon, Markwiek, Parker and Tagget. Miss Mavis Tucker and Mr. E. Perks played extras. Among those present were: Mesdames Carson, Page, Parker, Markwick, Stokes, Craig, Taylor, Tagget, Dixon. Lindner, Boyd, Campbell, Carr, Nixon, Whittle, Misses Gardiner, Jeffery, Tucker, P. Miller, M. On the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of Miss Mary Christensen, a large number of friends assembled at the home of her parents in the Tourist Domain, Te Aroha. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent with dancing, games and competitions. On behalf of the guests the Rev. C. W. Turner referred to the high esteem in which Miss Christensen was held, and presented her with a gift as a token of the good wishes mid congratulations of all present. Mr. Christensen responded on behalf of his daughter.

Tho first card and social evening of the White Eneign Social Club was held at the residence of the president, Mrs. S. J. jSfash, "Te Whare," Lewin Road, Epsom, on Saturday night. The prizes were won by Miss M. Boyd and Mr. D. Harper. The president, Mrs. S. J. Nash, wore figured georgette. Amongst those present were: Mesdames C. Padley, T. Jefferies, \V. Horscroft, W. Gill, Rusecll Smith, S. Norbury, H. Davies, A. D. Lee, Temperton, Anderson, Halford, Petrie, Baker, Rugg, Clark, Brain, and Misses M. Boyd and "Donkin. • * • •

A meeting of the Query Club was held in the Girls' Diocesan Association rooms yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. G. A. Eddowes presided over a fair attendance of members. As many members are etill out of town on holiday, it was decided to leave the programme for the year's work until the next meeting. An appeal was received from the City Mission for help at their fair to be held in June, and.the members agreed to take charge of the sweets stall. At the conclusion of the meeting tea was served, the hostesses being Mise Htiia Wiseman, Mrs. C. MacKenzie-King, Mise G. Williams, Miss M. Johnston. m * » •

A social and dance was he]d in the Wardville Hall with the object of raising further funds for the echool bus. The evening was promoted by the residents of Waghorn's Road, along which route the bus runs, and it resulted in some £30 being raised. Various competitions were held during the evening, and the winners were as follow: Spot waltz, Miss M. Shaw and Mr. N. Milne; Monte Carlo dance, Mies O. Waldron and Mr. I<\ Bowse; dinner, Mr. E. Ferry; sheep, Mr. H. Stafford; cigarettes, Mr. F. E. Hughes; lady's slippers, Mr. W. Lyall; tea cosy, Mrs. S. Warner; silk stockings, Miss M. Richie. * • * *

The Matamata Old Pupils' Association held a dance in the High School building, when the presentation of prizes for winners of the handicap tennis tournament held dxiring the season took place. Mr. W. Oates, president of the Matamata, Old Boys, and Miss M. Schwarz, president of the Old Girls' Association, presented the cups to Mies J. Wilson and Miss K. Shaw, winner and runner-up respectively of the old girls' tournament, and to Mr. V. Laurie, winner of the old boys' tournament. Among those present were: Misses M. •Schwarz, W. Banks (Tauranga), W. Bates, B. Turkington, E. Carter (Whangarei), E. Allison, J. Wilson, E. Prowsc, J. Thornton, V. Volliris, B. Madill, V. Simpson, E. Mclntyre, G. Jones, B. Brisco and M. Thirlwall.

The annual meeting of the Mount Albert Ladies' "Aroha" League was held at the residence of Mrs. Smythe, when Mrs. Barton was in the chair. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. E. Smythe; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Barton, Nicholl and Schmidt; secretary, Mrs. M. G. Tremain; treasurer, Mrs. Waugh. The report showed that the league had done much good work during the year, five tons of coal had been given to the distressed of Mount Albert, and also groceries to many deserving cases at Christmas. The league has also helped with street collections and several members have given card evenings, the money raised from cards being spent for comforts for the needy of Mount Albert. The league has arranged to hold Beveral card eveningw during this year. The meeting closed and afternoon tea was handed round by the executive.

The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ziman, of Park Avenue, Grafton, was held yesterday at their home. During the' afternoon and evening many eld friends called to convey their congratulations. Among them were the ministers and president of the Auckland Hebrew Congregation, who presented an illuminated address to mark the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Heineman, of Wellington, a married daughter, and Mr. L. Ziman, of Wellington, came to Auckland for the occasion. At the dinner in the evening there was also prosent, Mrs. W. Coleman, one of Mrs. Ziman's bridesmaids, and the Rev. Rabbi Goldstein, the Rev. and Mrs. Astor, Miss Ruby Coleman, Mr. Clive Coleman, and Mr. Ben Myers. The flower decorations were very beautiful, all in shades of old gold, and were the gifts of many friends.
