OVER THE CENTURY.
MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH. At the great age of 101 years, Neha Honana Potiki, chief of the NgatiParewahaika, sub-tribe of the NgatiTamatera of Hauraki and of the NgaHHaua of Waikato, died at Uniangawha, Colville, on March 18. He was born at Umangawha in 1832, and remembered seeing Captain Hobsou's ship at anchor off Tamaki. He was then seven or eight years of age. At different times the old chief lived in Auckland, Paeroa, Thames and Waikato. During the war with the Waikato tribes, Potiki joined the Kingitee, but his father brought him back to Auckland. In 1803 he went to Thames, where he was married to Mere Matuku Matakau of the Ngati-Rautao, a sub-tribe of the Ngati-Maru of Hauraki. In 1870 Potiki and his wife went to live at Colville, then in 1890 they moved to Turua, and resided with Mr. P. Grace. In 1910 the aged couple went to Umangawha, where they have lived ever since. Mrs. Potiki survives her husband. Her age is stated to be 103 years.
