NOTES ON THE RUNNING.

« OPENING EVENT TO RACEFIELD. •°-vy Tatyoon got most support in the Trial . Stakes, 'but lost a lot of ground through trying to swerve round at the start. Kahau and Racefield both began quickly *from Sub-station and Schizanthus, then 'came Musgo, Notamint and Alarchette. Kahau tried to win all the way, but Raceffield was always close up, and, taking in the 'straight, won convincingly ;!by a length. The winner is a solid- - looking three-year-old, and is sure to 'improve with more experience. Kahau Stayed on better than usual and Sub-sta- . ±ion ran her best race to date. Kurapae . iwas going well in fourth place at the i finish, and is a likely improver. Good Effort by Cruachan. '1 Unoco carried most support in the Frankton Hurdles, and ran a good race, ;'B>ut Cruachan and Ruby Dawn both beat Hiini at the finish. Cruachan carried his *11.6 like a good horse* and stayed on too ■ well for the opposition at the finish. He should bo a good proposition during the * coming jumping season. Ruby Dawn . was out making, the pacc until the halffurlong, and ran a solid race. This mare i jumps well, and should soon win a hurdle contest. Unoco put up a useful performance, and may win a race on the country £ circuit. . Solomon Best Juvenile. f The public made Solomon a hot favr ourite in the Juvenile Handicap, and he won, though he had to be ridden out at the finish to hold off D'Artagnan. The is improving with every race, and < promises to develop into a real good sort. He has plenty of speed, and gives every indication that he will stay with age. D'Artagnan was running on at the finish, !hig effort being an improvement on his past form. I'oi Dance displayed a lot of speed, but weakened over the last furlong. Cherry' King ,put up a very creditable showing, and is a solid looking youngster, who may develop good form next season. Paganelli In Form. Paganelli fully justified his position as favourite in the Te Rapa Handicap, eventually winning by a neck from Chief Joy, though his weight was telling on him at the finish and he was all out to win. It was a first-rate performance, and it is doubtful if Paganelli has ever been better than at present. Chief Joy was staying on at the finish, and would Lave been much harder to beat if his rjder had got to work earlier on him. Knight of Australia was badly placed over the first half mile, but finished very fast in the straight. He will be much harder to beat next time he starts over a longer journey. Valpai showed up for over six furlongs, but the class was too good for him. Trishna was battling on at the finish, and may soon make a return to the winning list. Narrow Victory For Sea Ruler. With Voitre in the saddle Sea_ Ruler was made an odds-on favourite in the Linley Handicap, which he won by a neck from' Rose Lupin after a hard finish. The winner was never further back than third at any part of the race, and stayed l on impressively over the last furlong. He

is an improved hack and likely to win again in similar "ompany. Rose Lupin fan one of her best races and hung on better than usual. Merry Lap finished on solidly in the run home, and looks an improved horse since he last appeared in public. Rita's Light displayed her usual speed, but failed to run on over the last furlong. Moonfleet never looked a winner at any part of the contest. Another Win For Alloy. : The' field in the Puketaha High-weight was by no means a good one, and Alloy, who was dnade favourite, won handsomely at the finish. He waited on the leaders until half-way down the straight, and then ran to the front to score by a couple of lengths. Alloy was one of the fittest horses at the meeting, and his form during, the laet couple of months, has been consistent. Moter'e ran" one of his best races. for some time,. and should be worth keeping in mind from now on. Baroscope's display ' did hot impress, and he will have to improve before he can be regarded as a likely winner. Searcher, showed plenty of early speed, but appears to lack stamina. i Bambury All the Way. Although burdened with 10.0 in the Flying Handicap, Paganelli carried almost twice as much money as- Lord Val, the second favourite, while Bambury, who led all the, way, also had plenty of friends. Paganelli put up- a great effort under his big weight, but Bambury, "to whom he was concealing .nearly three stone, was too good for him. The winner has a ■brilliant turn of speed, and, as he is now staying on better than formerly, he should win more races before the season ends. Lord Val was never within striking distance of Bambury, and Manawhenua and Marechel's efforts did not impress, though the race should benefit Manawhenua. Desert Star Beats Chang. When the field lined up for the Beerescourt Handicap, Merry Lap was missing, and • most support came for Chane and Desert Star, who both paid the dividends, though in the reverse order. Hawthorn, Beau Irish and Don't Lap were the early pacemakers, but the first two dropped back at the home turn, where Chang and Desert Star began to move up. Chang looked the winner at the distance, but Desert Star, who was ridden .more patiently, outstayed him at the finish and won by a neck. Don't Lap was a length and a half away. Desert Star is now at the top of his form, and should win more races before the autumn meetings arc over. Don't Lap and Chang both ran solid races, but none of the others impressed.
