Under the slogan "Rather Death Than Slavery," 80,000 Republicans, Liberals and Socialists demonstrated at the Lustgarden, carrying banners with the Republican Army's colours. Speakers emphasised that "Vorwaerts" and 28 other Socialist newspapers, in addition to almost all the Communist publications, were at present banned and urged a gigantic effort on the part of the public of Berlin to recover liberty at the elections. The newspaper "Germania," the leading organ of the Centre party, has been suspended for the publication of an election manifesto attacking the Hitler regime. President Hindenburg has issued a decree restoring 'somet of the cuts made on the social services , , last year, notably in pensions and war invalids. The total involved is £1,400,000.
