BAND CONTEST.
OTAGO MUSICAL CARNIVAL ST. JOSEPH'S ORPHANAGE WIN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. The feature of the opening day of the New Zealand band contest on Saturday, before an attendance of about 7000, was the, outstanding excellence of the St. Joseph's Orphanage Band in -winning the brass bands' event by a very fair margin. Following were the results: — Brass Bands.—St. Joseph's Orphanage Band, 245% points (military 166%, musical 79), Is Milton Brass Band, 230% points (military 153%, musical 77), 2; Port Chalmers Band, 220% points (military 145%. musical 75), 3. Also competed: Geraldme Band, 201% points. Pipe Bands. —Dunedin Highland Pipe Bamd, 173% points (military 83%, musical 90), 1; Christehurch Scottish Pipe Band, 167% points (military 79%, musical 88), 2; Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland, 164% points (military 80%, musical 84), 3. Also competed: Balclutha Pipe Band, 161% points; Taieri Pipe Band, 152% points. In the evening, selections for the pipe bands and C grade brass bands were judged, the same bands coming forward as In the afternoon. The judge said he disliked the choice of music generally in both brass band events. The winning band, St. Joseph's Orphanage, stood out as the most refined and tuneful combination. The results were:— Brass Bands.—St. Joseph's Orphanage Band, 136 points, 1; Port Chalmers Band, 133 points, 2; Geraldine Band, 130 points, 3. Also competed: Milton Band, 129 points. Pipe Bands.—Taieri Pipe Band, 87 points, Is Christehurch Scottish, 86, 2; Dunedin Highland, 85, 3. Also competed: Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland, a<s; Balclutha Pipe Band, 79. ' This morning's results were as follows: — E Flat Soprano Cornet.—D. Taylor (Timaru), 86, 1; C. Unwin (St. Kilda), 85, 2; J. Bannin (Christehurch), 83, 3. Euphonium Solo. —O. Williams (Wanganui), 86, 1; M. Clark (Kaikorai), 82, 2; J. W. Kay (Invercargill), 81. 3.
