DROWNING AVERTED.
INCIDENT AT KAREKARE. RESCUER WITH ROPE. A narrow escape from drowning was experienced by a youth when bathing with two companions at Karekarc, West Coast, a little before 11 o'clock yesterday morning. There wore others bathing and it was suddenly noticed that tire youth, who could not swim, was in the grip of the strong current near Lookout Rock. His two companions went ashore as quickly as possible to secure help, ai.d Mr. Harold Westwood, of Auckland, promptly decided to attempt to rescue the youth, who was by this time beyond the breakers. A rope was procured, and with one end of it tied securely around his waist Mr. Westwood swam out. He had considerable difficulty in reaching the youth, but eventually both ■vere pulled in by the other members of Mr. Wcstwood's party, who held the othsr end of the rope at the water's edge. The youth who had been rescued was in an exhausted state when brought ashore, but after artificial respiration he recovered.
