FRUIT GENERALLY CHEAP.

: Owing to the radn, smaller supplies of . fruit came to hand for Monday's sale, but ample lots arrived to-day. A fair quantity of peaches are on sale, and the quality has so far been good. Plums have ' firmed a little in price now that the glut 1 of Burbanks and Sultans is about over. 1 Large quantities of tomatoes are being sent in, and prices continue on the low side. Hothouse grapes are in heavy , supply and sold at low prices. Quotations are:— , Fruit. Apples: Dessert, Gravensteins, 3/ to 6/ per case; Albany Beauty, 3/ to 6/6; Astrachan, 2/6 to 5/; Scarlet Peavmain; 2/ to 4/; cookers, 2/6 to 4/ case; windfalls and others, 1/ to 2/6. Pears: Dessert, Bon Chretiens, 4/ to 6/ case; cookers, 2/ to 2/6. Apricots: Otago, 5/ to 6/6 case. Nectarines: 3/ to 5/ case. Peaches: 1/9 to 2/3 in trays; 3/6 to 5/ case. Plums: October Purple, 2/ to 3/6 case; Purple King, 4/ to 5/6; others, 2/6 to 3/6. Raspberries: 3/ to 4/ tin. Blackberries: 3%d to 5d chip. Oranges: Californian, 39/ case; Valencias, 16/ to 18/. Tomatoes: 1/ to 3/ case. Bananas: No. 1, 13/ to 15/ case; medium and No. 2, 6/ to 13/. Cape gooseberries: 3d to 3%d lb. 'Strawberries: Captain Cook, 0d to 1/3 chip. .Lemons: 8/ to 14/ case. Grapes: Hothouse, 6d to lOd per lb. Mushrooms: 15/ to 17/ per benzine tin. Vegetables, Cabbage and peas from Ohakune are now coming on the market. Supplies of cabbage are also being received from Paeroa and Rotorua. First-class potatoes free from blight and rust sold at better rates. Other lines than these were hard to quit, even'at the low figures ruling. Good samples of lettuce are in short supply, with the result that prices firmed. Carrots are in good demand, but there if? a glut of pumpkins. Onions are now meeting with better demand. Quotations are:— Potatoes, 1/3 to 2/3 per bag; swedes, 2/ to 4/ per bag; onions, 2/3 to 2/9 per bag; kumaras, l%d to l%d per lb; cabbages, 2/6 to 6/6 ,per sack; cauliflowers, 4/ to 5/6 per sack; pumpkins, 3/ to 5/ per cwt; cucumbers, nominally Id to 2d per dozen; carrots, 1/ to 1/6 per dozen; parsnips, &d to 1/3 per dozen; beet, 9d to 1/3 per dozen; turnips, 6d per dozen; radish, 6d to lOd per dozen; spring onions, 6d to 1/6 per bundle; spinach, 6d to lOd per dozen; green peas, 4/ to 7/ per bag; French beans, 1/ to 3/6 per bag; marrows, 1/ to 2/ per dozen; watermelons, 4d to 1/ each; citron melons, 5d to 8d each; lettuce, 6d to 5/6 per case; celery, cooking, 6d to 9d per bundle; dessert, 1/ to 1/6 per bundle; rhubarb, 6d to 1/6 per dozen. Eggs and Butter. Another rise in the price of eggs has taken place, as supplies are falling off, and with the hot weather a better demand set in.. First grade hen eggs are 1/3% per dozen; B grade. 1/2%. and C grade [ remain at last week's quotation of 9%d. First grade duck eggs are now quoted at 1/2% per dozen; B grade, 1/1%, and C grade, 10% d. Farmers' butter is still 6d to 8d per lb. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was fair. The prices paid remain about level. Selling rates were as follow:— Co.ckerels, heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 4/ each; not prime, 6d up; light breeds, , prime, 1/6 to 2/6; not prime, 3d up; fat roosters, heavy breeds, prime, 1/6 to 1/9; light breeds, 1/ to 1/6; fat hens, heavy breeds, 1/3 to 1/9; light breeds, 9d to 1/3; pullets, heavy breeds, best, 2/6 to 4/; smaller, 1/3 up; light breeds, best, 2/6 to 4/; smaller, 1/3 up; drakes, young, prime, 1/ to 1/6; smaller, 6d up; ducks, young, 1/6 to 2/6; old, 9d to 1/; drakes, old, 9d to 1/.
