"HEADY" BOWLING.

OXENHAM PUZZLES M.C.C.

ENGLAND 303 FOR EiIGHT.

ALLEN AND AMES SAVE SIDE,

BRISBANE, February 6. The cricket match England versus Queensland was continued to-day at Brisbane. The weather was delightfully mild and fine, and the wicket still perfect for the batsmen. There were nearly -6000 spectators, and the receipts totalled £455. , When stumps were drawn on baturclay Queensland had made 201 runs in their first innings, and England six for no wickets in their first venture. Ihe visitors to-day took their total to 303 for eight wickets. . . Apart from one hectic over by the schoolboy slow bowler, Govan, off which 22 runs were scored, the English batsmen were definitely subdued against the Queensland attack. This was largely due to the excellent efforts of Oxenham, whose claims for inclusion in the lest matches were 6eriously considered earlier in the season.. , None of the batsmen was at home to Oxenham. His captures of Sutcline and Jardine were due to "heady" bowling. Sutcliffe's was the best batting display to-day. ... Jardine was painfully slow, compiling only 34 runs in 132 minutes. _Wyatt experienced a charmed life, being missed three times behind the wickets before he reached 30. . , Hammond was moving along nicely when he fell to a brilliant catch by Levy. Having taken six wickets for 169 at the tea adjournment, the Queenslanders had performed exceptionally well. Half an hour after tea Allen drove Bensted to the on, bringing the English score past that of Queensland. Previously Paynter had lifted Oxenham into an outer field, and there was a delay of a few minutes before the ball was recovered. The Allen-Paynter partnership provided the brightest batting of the day, but the appearance of fast bowlers with a new ball slowed down the scoring. The aboriginal express bowler, Gilbert, secured his second wicket by getting Paynter leg before. The bateman obviously had been uncomfortable. Allen played a particularly sound innings. He reached his 50 in 98 minutes, including six fours and a six. Allen's partnership with Ames took full toll of the tired bowling, and improved England's position, but Allen was caught off the last ball of £fie day. Scores:— QUEENSLAND.
