FIFTY MILES AN HOUR.
ELEVEN PEOPLE IN VAN". Thomas Stanley, aged 19, of Mount Albert, did not appear at the Onehunga Police Court this morning when charged before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., with speeding at Mangere on January 14. The traffic inspector, P. Jones, said Stanley was driving a van in Coronation Road, Mangere, at 46 miles per hour, and increased that speed to 50 miles. When stopped by the inspector, defendant admitted that he was having a go with a youth on a motor bicycle to see which could get to the end of the road first. There were eleven young people on the van, which swayed considerably, evidently to their amusement.
Mr. Levien said he thought a period of inactivity, would be good for the youth, and he proposed to cancel his license for 12 months and fine him £3. However, at the urgent request of Stanley's father, who said his son had to drive his employer's motor truck, a fine was imposed and the license was not [affected.
