AMUSEMENTS.

PLAZA THEATRE,

The busy brain of the late Edgar Wallace probably turned out its best production in "The Ringer," the British film version of which is to be seen this week at the Plaza Theatre. The story of "The Ringer"—the elusive criminal who holds his enemies in terror and comes and goes with baffling certainty, finally slipping away under.the very noses of the police—is known to thousands all over the world, but so deftly are the situations contrived, and so cumulative is the suspense in the talking film, that the tale never ceases to exercise its fascination. Its remarkable power is increased in the film version, which moves swiftly from scene to scene, and heightens the mystery and the effect as it goes. The picture, which has been produced by that rising British director, Walter Forde, is also happy in its brilliant cast, which comprises such artists as Patric Curwen, Franklin Dyall, John Longden, Carol Goodner, and last, but not least, Gordon Harker, whose finished performance as the butler is a gem of humour and artistry. "When London sleeps—the thrills begin," is an apt way of describing the new British film, "When London Sleeps," to come to the Plaza at the end of this week. Diana Beaumont, the brunette beauty who has been missing from the screen for quite a while, occupies one of the stellar parts, while Harold French, a handsome male star, and Rene Ray, also have prominent parts. SUNDAY CHARITY CONCERT. A'charity concert held in the Empress Theatre last evening in aid of the "Down-and-Out" Mission, resulted in a crowded house, with a very appreciable sum collected. An entertaining programme was offered by Mr. Neville Carlsen's players, who will present a similar concert next Sunday evening.
