SUMMER BOWLING.

ALL GREENS NOW REFRESHED-

ROTORUA TOURNEY THIS WEEK. MEETING- AUSTRALIA NEXT YEAR. (By TRUNDLER.) Even the most optimistic hardly dared to hope that the little misty rain on Friday afternoon, would develop into a solid downpour, the first really soaking rain in the city and suburbs since the morning of Labour Day. • However, it was just about perfect, and as the weather was fine during the whole of Saturday, there was a full muster of bowlers in the afternoon ' on every green, thoroughly enjoying their improved appearance, even though they were a little heavy. The first Rotorua tournament begins to-day, with a full entry of 55 rinks, 32 being from Auckland and five from Wellington. Last year's Onehunga winners will be competing again, the only change being the No. 2. This year the rink will comprise R. Sutherland, A. E. Sayers, F. Livingstone and H. A. Robertson. It is rather strange that the Rotorua committee accepted 55 rinks, which necessitates 20 players standing out in each round, instead of avoiding the unpopular bye like they did last year, when they played it in four sections. This also avoided the bye in the post-section play. However, it is understood that the second tournament, commencing a fortnight later, will be pairs instead of rinks, so probably this induced them to accept all the rinks offering, even to the extent of accepting ■nine from Carlton,, instead of the usual limit of five. Nearly all the most prominent skips from this centre are competing, and a good sprinkling from South Auckland and other parts of the North Island, so the play should again be of a very high standard. Probably the most interested spectator will be Dr. John Rusk, of Belfast, a past president of the Irish Bowling Association, who is enjoying a health trip by avoiding the northern winter. He has already spent a few weeks in Australia and the South Island, and arrived in Wellington last Wednesday, intending to leave for Rotorua last might, see the tournament and the geysers, and then spend next week in Auckland, leaving for Sydney by the Marama on the 17th. He has a good bowling record, and will be glad to see some exhibitions of what ought to be the highest standard of play that New Zealand can produce. There should be some splendid contests in every section, but if the greens are keen and both sides strike their usual form, it is unlikely that there will be anything to beat the game between Walker (Auckland) and last year's Onehunga winners, who apparently meet on Wednesday morning.' Professor Walker only returned from the Dominion tournament last Monday, having spent the ,intervenit\g week in a visit to the South Island. Accompanied by Mr. L. J. Keys, he went over to Westland to see the Franz Josef glacier, and they enjoyed their trip very much. An interesting Parliamentary bowling match was played on the Wellington green last Saturday week, the visitors scoring a heavy win:— W. Gifford ("Hansard," Tauranga Bowling Club),- A. E. Ansell (M.P. for Chalmers), S. G. Smith (M.P. for New Plymouth), Hon. R. Masters (Minister of Education) 31, v. J. Hunter, W. Ridler, A. Jacobs, W. Berry (Wellington) 12. At Canberra they have gone one better than in Wellington, for the Australian capital sports a bowling green for the special use of the members of the Commonwealth Parliament, and a good proportion of them are regular players. However, there is no pressing necessity here, where so many spend the week-ends at home, and can therefore meet their friends in their own districts. Although the victory of H. S. Maslin and M. J. Squire, .of Hawera, in the Dominion pairs last month put the Taranaki Centre in the list of Dominion champipmrhipff fpj" the BtisTit transpires tfiat the Eltham Club is entitled to a good deal of the credit, for that is where Squire learned the game. By &coincidence the same Taranaki club was riesp° n sible for bringing out W. M. Parkhou3>e» who won the Dominion singles in the recent tournament in the Wellington colours.' .As a matter of fact, this double win was jio'V the first occasion where Eltham could' claim a win, for that club brought out C. H. de Launay, who played third for Walker when they won the rink championship last year. Not bad for Eltham. A bowler who saw most of the postsection play in Wellington says that one of the outstanding features was the brilliant performance of Maxwell Walker against C. A. Rendle's Eastbourne rink in the fourth round, which culminated in a spectacular shot to win with his last bowl. Auckland started the last head at 18 to 16, but when Rendle had played his Second bowl, Eastbourne were lying what looked like a perfectly safe 5, to win by 3. Most skips would have smashed the head, trusting to mixing the counters, but Walker decided to draw through a narrow opening on the backhand. His bowl: got a very slight wick off one of Rendle's and gave him the shot," to win by. 19 to 10. In the next game, agamst the Carlton runners-up, his team admit that., if they had given him anything like fair support they would have won, for Walker never played a more brilliant game, continually winning applause from the bank for his wonderful exhibition._ It is splendid to see how he retains his capacity to reproduce his best form when up against it, for it was all wanted, as Jenkin's rink were all playing well, noticeably Pascoe, and at one stage Walker saved 19 points in five heads. It will be remembered that at the half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Council, always held 4 U P U S the tournament, it was decided to give Australia a timely confirmation of the arrangement made when their party of (38 competed in the Test in Wellington four years ago, that the next Tests in New Zealand, which would be the fourth, were to be played in Dunedin next January. However, "Boomerang" gives in the last issue of the "Sydney Referee" the very startling intimation that if the next Dominion tournament is to be held at the usual time and consequently the * Tests also, it will clash with the next carnival of the Australian Bowling Council, to be held in Adelaide, whereas it was understood here that the Adelaide function was to be at Easter. The matter is too much involved to be treated in this column, and will , be dealt with in the Eight o'Clock Edition , on Saturday, with a suggestion for solving the apparent difficulty. • In the meantime it must be admitted that "Boomerang" has placed the bowlers on both sides of the Tasman under an ] obligation through his early warning ot ; the clash in dates, as also through the publicity he is giving to the Dominion tournament last month, to create Austra- , lian interest in the Tests in Dunedin next ] year. CLUB GAMES. f — ( AUCKLAND GREEN. Anniversary Day Open Tournament Final—The linal of this event, for which 30 teams had entered, was played on the Auckland green on Saturday afternoon. It was a close and most enjoyable game, and , resulted in a' win for an Auckland team skipped by Colin Huston. The play was ot a high standard throughout, and the result was in doubt, until the close of the game. Result: Kummer, Myers, Moir, Muston (Auckland) 23, v. Purdy, Jones, Gifford, BALMORAL GREEN.
