COUNTRY RACING.

MATAMATA MEETING.

PLACE-TOTE POPULAR.

CUP TO KING'S KNAVE.

. Tie annual meeting of the Matamata Racing Club on Saturday proved a big success, and with the weather conditions favourable fine racing was provided. The place-tote was operated for the first time in Auckland and caught on with the crowd, and the fact that not a placed horse during the afternoon returned backers less than the amount of tlic-ir investments can be accepted to mean that place betting will become universal. The Matamata Cup was won by King's Knave after a close finish with Lady Lulu, while Gay Lap and Chief Cook won the open sprints, Gay Lap returning a double-figure dividend on the win only machine. The amount put through the totalisator was £11,000, against £10,646 10/ last year, an increase of £353 10/. Of the £11,000 no lees than £7108 10/ was invested on the place machine, which proved very popular. Below are details of the later races:— j The Cup. King's Knave, who carried most money, put up a good performance to win the Cup. Beryl Latour and Lady Lulu were the leaders, and with half the iourney covered, Mungatoon was in behind them with Knight of Australia and Grand Talk next. Lady Lulu and Beryl Latour were still the leaders at the home turn, where Grand Talk and King's Knave were -now- -within- striking distance. . In the straight, there was a line race, King's Knave just wearing Lady Lulu down to win by a head. Grand Talk was half a head away, followed by Mungatoon, Bugle Call, and Beryl Latour. : H Tojp-weight Wins. 7 In a big field Woodful and Bambury shared favouritism in the Railway Hack Handicap. Bambury began best and led out from Rose Lupin, Woodful and vNorval Tea. Continuing on in the lea,d> Bambury turned for home first from Norval Tea, Woodful, Searcher, Rose Lupin, Dark Marble and Desert Star. In the run home Woodful took charge and won by a length from Desert Star, with Dark Marble a neck away. Then followed Rita's Light, Bambury, Norval Tea, On Approval and Rose Lupin. Dark Marble paid a double-figure dividend for third place. N Moved Up One. •Sinking Fund, who had filled second place to Great Britain earlier in the afternoon, came out again in the Putavuru Stakes and moved up one, this time finishing in front. He was well supported, the favourite being Glenromney. The latter was the early leader from Schizanthus, Sinking Fund, Queen Nona and Nifty. Schizanthus had taken charge before reaching the straight, and she led round the home turn from Sinking Fund, Nifty, Glenromney and Queen Nona. The leader tired badly in the run to the judge, and Sinking Fund won by two lengths from Queen Nona, with D'Artagnan a neck away. Schizanthus, JSpearwin, Lagoon and Hunting Maid followed. Valpai Wins Well. Pelting was the favourite in the Okorcire Handicap, and he went a good race, but had to be content with third place. Valpai led all the way. He was liret out of the barrier, and showed the way to Don't Lap, Merry Lap and Beau Irish. Along the back Beau Irish ran up to Valpai, the pair being attended by Don't Lap, Solo Song and Transaction. Into the straight the order was Valpai, Don't Lap, Transaction, Pelting and Merry Lap. Valpai held his advantage and won by a length from Don't Lap, with Pelting a length away. Merry Lap, Transaction, Last Lap and Foulwind followed. A Close Finish. Chief Cook, the favourite for the Walton Handicap, pulled his backers through, but it was a close thing between victory and defeat. Chromadyne was the first to show out from Karangapai, but the latter then ran to the front and led along the back from Chromadyne, Baroscope and LordVal. Baroscope had taken charge across the top, and was well clear entering the straight, where Chromadyne, Chief Cook, Karangapai and Lord Val were following. Baroscope tired in the run home, and in a great finish Chief Cook won by half a head from Lord Val, with Alloy halffc a length away.
