THE SPIRIT OF THE RAIN.
I (By BlssTFlavell, P.O. Box 313, Hawera, age 15). I saw the rain, a dim, grey spirit pass, Shuddering, across a field of emerald grass; I saw her -wring her hands and weep, And -wander a valley steep, As if she vainly sought for something there. And ,then upon a lofty mountain erag, Weeping, she climbed, o'er many a rocky crag; White cloud-wraiths whirled around^ her feet, The icy Wind, with motion fleet, Swept shrieking by and wildly tossed her hair. She strove to reach her cloudy home, the sky, And as, towards those far-off lands on high, She supplicating stretched her hands, A thousand glorious shining bands Of silvery light across the mountain felL And at the spirit's feet one splendid ray Fell, making for her happy feet, a way Which to the pearly cloud-lands led, And swift, rejoicing, up she sped, Her tears all banished by the sunshine's spell.
