MAORI ACQUITTED.
Three charges of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a Maori girl under the age of 16 years were preferred against a Maori, Angel Matthews, aged 20, in the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Herdman, yesterday. Mr. Quartley appeared for accu6ed and Mr. Meredith acted for, the Crown. Accused pleaded not guilty. The alleged offences were stated to have been committed at Omanaia, near Rawene, in April, May and November of last year. After a short retirement, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
