YOUTHFUL CRIMINAL SENTENCED. •"The way you arc going, you will soon lie declared lan habitual criminal." said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., to Richard Howe, a labourer, aged 24, who appeared on a series of charges in the Policc Court this morning. Howe, for whom Mr. K. C. Aekine appeared, pleaded guilty to nine charges of obtaining sums totalling £10 18/« l by means of valueless cheques, theft nf a cheque book and obtaining a keg of beer,by means of a .valueless cheque.
"Although ho is quite young lie appears to be hopeless," said the magistrate,'. "He has a very bad list. I think ti few strokes of the birch would be the best thing for him, but I cannot order that."
Howe was convicted on all charges ami on 0110. he was sentenced to six months' hard' labour, to be followed by two years.' reformative detention. On a. further vagrancy charge, Howe was remanded to appear at Pukekohe o>i February 2.
