SIXTY YEARS AT SEA.

PASSENGER FROM AMERICA

Aboard the 0." and" O. Line steamer Golden Harvest, winch arrived at Auckland from Los Angeles yesterday afternoon, is Captain J. 0. Youngreen, aged 74, travelling as passenger in a vessel ho formerly commanded.

Although ho retired about four years ago, Captain Youngreen still takes command occasionally of one of the Matson Company's steamers, but he is making the present voyage solely for pleasure. He -first went to sea at the age of ten, shipping from Boston in a vessel bound for the Orient, and was later a teaman in the famous clipper Paul Revere, trading between Boston and China.

He removed his home to San Francisco in 1878, and three years later gained his master's certificate. When he joined the Matson Company in ISOO'the fleet consisted solely of sailing shij.e, but in 1902 he was given command, of their first steamer, the Enterprise. In this vessel he remained master for over 24 years, making 240 round trips between San Francisco and Ha\vaii without an accident. Since his retirement in 1927, he has several times been calle'l on by the company to take temporary command of their vessels, but this is his first visit to New Zealand, his on'y previous sight of this country being a glimpse of the Three Kings when he was blown out of his course on a voyage from Sydney to San Franciso
