INTRUDER IN HOUSE.

STRUGGLE IN REMUERA HOME. * MAN • OVERPOWERED. - ' SUSPECT REMANDED. Following a struggle in a Remucra house at nine O'clock last rii'glit, a tall, well-set-up 'intruder, found by Mr. C. M. Emanuel when he entered tlie front door of his home, 17, Remuera Road, was overpowered and held until the police arrived to take him into custody.

Mr. Emanuel and liis family, together with some friends, left the house at 7.30 for a drive to Mission Bay., The house was securely. locked before departure. The party returned by car, reaching home at 9 o'clock.' Mr. Emanuel went to the front door, leaving bis two sons to put the car in the garage at the side of the house, which' is ' Surrounded by a large garden and drive. . Tlie house was in complete darkness. Opening the front door, Mr. Emanuel switched on the light, and was surprised to see a tall man at the other end of the hall, near a coat rack. The man did not move, neither did lie speak. An Awkward Situation. "For a moment I did not quite know what to do," said Mr. Emanuel, in describing the incident to a reporter this morning. "You see, I am' small, and the man could have easily got the better of mc had ho liked'. I approached him and asked him what lie . was doing in my home. 'It's quite all right,' said the intruder, who made excuses for his presence. I caught hold of him by the arm. He had one hand in his coat pocket, and kept it there. Just then I could hear one of the ladies of the party coming to the front door, so I called out to her, 'Call the boys.' .She did so.. Meanwhile the man commenced to struggle, and we both edged our way out into the garden. My .two sons then held him while I returned, to the house to telephone the Xcjvmarket police..' Just .as I returned to my sons in the drive' the- man struggled and broke free. One of my sons, Trevor, who does a little amateur boxing at the University, gave chase and caught the man. as ho was nearing the gate leading on to Reinuera ltoad. The man turned on him> and struck liim, giving Trevor. a nasty.! black: eye. Another struggle - took • place, during which the hoy had his clothing-consider-ably torn. However, ho managed to secure an armlock on the man and held him until-the other bpy ;camo .to; his assistance." Police Respond to Call. Sergeant Finch, of tlie Newmarket station', was the only, one .on. the station when he received, the summons for help. He is at present on leave and. when Mr. Emanuel telephoned, him, he was doing his exercises 'before retiring" early. " He hastily donned ' some" clothing and sped rouncl. to Rcmuera Road in a taxi • and took the intruder into custody. By this time Detective-Sergeant Mcllugh and Detective Hayes had arrived at Mr. Emanuel's house from the city. "This is the second time my home has been entered," said Mr. Emanuel. "Only a few months ago a burglar got in and stole money and jewellery valued at £150.' I don't think , last night's intruder had much time to search the house before wo arrived home unexpectedly. Suspect in Court. William Preston, aged 46, carter, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, charged and entering Mr. Emanuel's dwelling last night ,and .stealing a pair of. gold .cuff links valued at £1. '
