DIPLOMATIC CONCERN.
RETALIATION ONLY REMEDY. SYDNEY, January 25. The leg-tlieory, or body-line, bowling controversy continues unabated. The "Sun" states: "That unexpectedly far-rcacliing consequences may follow from the dispute and the cablegrams which have passed between the Australian Board of Cricket Control and the Marylebone Club is evidenced by the fact that the subject was discussed in a radio-telephone conversation between the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, and the Australian Minister in London, Mr. S. M. Bruce."
The paper says it is understood that Mr. Bruce emphasised the effect that might follow in relation to Australian affairs overseas.
Mr. L. P. D. O'Connor, a former Queensland captain, says: "Retaliation is the only remedy. The players will then get fed up and call a truce themselves."
Two country cricket teams employed the leg theory in a match at Grafton. As a result three batsmen were knocked unconscious.
A message from Hobart states that the "Mercury," in a. leading article, states: "We believe we express a very general opinion when we say tho best course would be to cancel the remaining Test matches and allow Jardine and his team to return to the place from which they emerged. A rest of five or 10 years from these contests may serve to restore to the game that spirit which Jardine and his men, with the able assistance of others, have done so much to destroy."
The English cricketers arrived from Melbourne to-day for the four days' match against New South Wales, to commence on Thursday.
The New South Wales Cricket Association had roped off half of No. 2 cricket ground so as to prevent a repetition of the barracking scenes which occurred in Adelaide, but D. R. Jardinc, the English captain, decided that his team should not practise to-day.
The New South Wales team will be: A. F. Ivippax (captain), D. G. Bradman, W. Brown, J. H. Fingleton, C. Hill, W. A. Howell, G. Stewart, F. S. Cummins, R. Rowe, H. C. Chilvers, H. S. Love (wicket-keeper).
