Lady Swimmer Saves Four Men Bathers.
WASHED OUT BY UNDERTOW. (Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this (lay. Miss Lily Beaurepaire, tlie former Australian swimming champion, was the central figure in a thrilling rescue of four men who had been swept by the undertow into a heavy surf at Lome. She ran a quarter of a mile on hearing the alarm, then swam 200 yards and brought the men ashore on a surfboard.
The name o£- Beaurepaire is famous in swimming circles chiefly through the performances of Frank E. Beaurepaire, w ho, in 1910, was virtual champion of the world. He is a Victorian, and 20 years ago the Beaurepaire family was quite a force ;.n competitive swimming in Melbourne, Miss Lily Beaurepaire then being only a youngster. Even then she gave of carrying on the family reputation, and later she figured prominently in women's swimming competitions in Victoria, and elsewhere in Australia, though not reaching the class of her distinguished elder brother.
