DOMINATING POWER.
NEW FIRE BOARD ELECTION
LOCAL BODY REPRESENTATIVE. The fact that, under the system of voting, the two largest suburban areas in the Metropolitan Fire Board district could, by combining forces, control the election of the two representatives for the eight local bodies, was emphasised at the meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last evening, when the council had under consideration the nomination of a representative.
The Mayor, Mr. 1. J. Goldstine, stated that if Mount Eden and Mount Albert combined, and the other local bodies divided their votes, the two boroughs could elect the representatives. On the ,other hand, an undivided vote by the remaining local bodies would elect any two representatives they desired to support. The Mayor said that be had discussed a suggestion that Mount Eden and Mount Albert combine to elect one representative, and the other six local bodies the other, and although there appeared to be support for the idea, it was now rather late to carry out such an arrangement. Personally, lie did not think it mattered where the two representatives came from, as there was little danger of unfair treatment. He would not accept nomination, but it was open for any of the members to do so.
In the course of discussion it was stated that the matter was not a parochial one, and it was decided not to make any nomination for the election, which takes place on February 9. The Newmarket Borough Council also decided at its meeting last evening not to forward a nomination.
