RESTRICTING WATER BORING. SUBURBAN BODIES' PROPOSAL. An explanation of the powers sought in the bill promoted by the Onelmnga and One Tree Hill Borough Councils was sought by a deputation representing manufacturing interests which waited on the One Tree Hill Council last evening. The legislation proposes to restrict and control the sinking of bores for water in the two districts.
"We desire to know why this drastic legislation is sought; it will have serious consequences to manufacturers," said Mr. J. Meiienzie Wilson, the leader of the deputation, which represented manufacturing interests in the two boroughs and neighbouring districts. The speaker said that there were a number of important industries in the area, such as freezing and fertiliser works, woollen mills, and others which required plentiful supplies of water, and it was mainly because of the presence of underground supplies that they had been established in the districts. Mr. Wilson criticised the proposals as an interference with their titles, and it was the intention to resist them to the uttermost.
The request for a plain statement of the purpose of the legislation could not bo given immediately, as the Onehunga Borough Council was interested in it, stated the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, in reply. However, he gave an assurance that there was no intention to interfere with any existing wells. He emphasised that the council had to satisfy the ratepayers that their interests were protected.
The council later discussed the matter in committee, the Mayor stating that no reply could be made until the Onelmnga Borough Council had. been consulted.
