SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Mrs. A. Newdick, of Goldsmith Road, Epsom, entertained a number of guests for afternoon tea yesterday, in honour . of Mns. Bush, who has just returned to i Auckland. The lounge and sitting rooms were arranged witli high stands of tiger lilies, deep red roses supplying an attractive tone to the tea table. Mrs. Newdick wore an almond green ninon and lace frock. Among those present were: Mesdames Niclioll, Mitchell, Hankin, Bush, Cutten, Butler, Sharpe, Lux, Penman, Grace, Mallard, Covey, Pearson, Gibson, Kylle, Quin, Ward, Shaw, Todd, Blackett, Bayly, Shepherd, Misses Foley, Robinson, Homer, and Gibson. # • # • Miss Edna Craig, of Wapiti Avenue, Epsom, gave a cheery bridge party at her residence last evening in honour of Miss Maida Hooker. The card room was attractive with large crystal bowls containing various shades of hydrangea and zinnias, while scarlet geraniums decorated the lounge. The supper table looked attractive with low bowk of coloured canna blooms. The hostess received the guests in an ivory frilled taffeta. The guest of honour wore deep red Chantilly lace. Among those present were: Mesdames H. A. Steadman, A. Lamb, E. Verron, Norman Watson, Eric Waters, I. McGregor, J. Osborne, Misses Nora Friedlander, Linda de Renzy, Peggy Flvnn, Laurie Byrne, Fox, Vera Ziman and Rena Pagni. * * * * Prior to her departure yesterday for Hamilton, Miss Ella Shields, of the Frank Neil Revue Company, entertained a small party of intimate friends to morning tea at the Grand Hotel in honour of the young Aucklander, Norman Kersland, from whom the wellknown stage star recently accepted a specially-arranged song, "Waiting for the Summer Time." This number Mies Shields intends to add to her repertoire, and she considers it will rival in popularity her "Burlington Bertie." Being unable to introduce the song at Auckland on Tuesday evening, Miss Shields has invited the youthful composer to Wellington to play the opening pianoforte accompaniment. Tho words of the new song were originated by Miss Rose Williams, a young member of a Grey Lynn family, who has a literary flare, with leanings to poetry and music. There was a large attendance of spectators at the Stanley Street courts yesterday when the opehing of the Auckland Provincial tennis championships was held. The weather was perfect for such an occasion and the scene presented was a gay one. Play commenced early in the morning and continued all day. Luncheon and afternoon tea were served in a. large marquee the decorations on the tables being 'bowls of dahlias.- ■ The arrangements for refreshments were in the hands of 'the Campbell' Park" Tennis , Club yesterday and other clubs, including Parnell, Eden 1 and Epsom, Royal...Oak and Remuera, will be in charge-on the following'days. A most successful concert for children at present staying at Cowes Bay was held on Tuesday evening. The spacious hall, generally kept for dancing, was gaily decorated for the occasion. Various games were arranged for the children, and all those present performed to the delight of all parents and friends. Promising talent was shown by the juveniles, and among those performing were: Jean Hughes, Arthur Hughes, Mary Rutland, Joan and Graham Reyburn, Dot Potter, Moreen Terry, Barbara Finnis, Clarice Scott, Rona Page, Joyce Barker, Alec Pert, and Laddie Lambourne. After a delightful supper and cool drinks were served, conjuring tricks were given by Owen Barker. Later in the evening various musical and elecutionary items were given by Miss Sussex, Mrs. Terry, Messrs. V. Simpson and party, Mr. Reyburn, Messrs Miller and Owen Barber, Mr. Keith Emanuel.
