SHORE DRAINAGE.
LOCAL BOARD SUGGESTED. TAKAPTTNA WANTS CONFERENCE Following the recent protest by the Waitemata County Council concerning the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board's proposed scheme of sewerage for the northern area, with an outfall and treatment works at Ranopara Point, near Castor Bay, the matter was discussed by the Takapuna Borough Council at its meeting last evening. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, it was decided to invite delegates from the boroughs of Devonport, Birkenhead, and Northcote, and Waitemata County Council to attend a conference at the Takapuna Borough Council Chambers, and to invite Mr. H. H. Watkins., engineer to the Drainage Board, and the medical officer of health, Dr. Hughes, to be present. Mr. Guiniven said there was a move to regard the present outfall at Black Rock as the main outfall. While it might be wrong to spoil the beaches higher up by an outfall at Ranopara Point, it would be a great deal worse to spoil the Milford and Takapuna beaches. The Mayor considered that the Waitemata Cobnty Council should have first written to Mr. Watkins, asking for full details, also whether float tests had been carried out. It would be a wrong course, he thought, to join in the Auckland scheme and thus overload the borough with debt. Mr. Guiniven advocated the formation of a North Shore Drainage Board, for the purpose of mapping out all future drainage operations on the North Shore. If such a body was formed it could perform much valuable work. ■ |
