SWIMMING.

PONSONBY CARNIVAL MISSES LEYDON, WEBSTER AND B. COOKE IN FORM. A. RAPER ATTACKS RECORD. There was an attendance of nearly 1000 at the Tepid Baths last night for the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and Lifesaving Club's "monster" carnival. Remarkable enthusiasm was displayed throughout a long and attractive programme, although interest waned a trifle during the two long diving events. Judging by the barracking" which took place, there could not have been many people fond of sport left in Ponsonby, Mount Eden and Birkcn-head-Northcote last evening. Although he swam well, an effort by A. Raper (Ponsonby) to lower the New Zealand 100 metres backstroke record of 1.19 2-5, held by L. J. Moorhouse (Canterbury), failed by three seconds. The best performance of the evening was that of Miss Mona Leydon, who won her heat of the hundred in the excellent time of 68s. The final was the best race of the carnival, the Ponsonby girl just beating the much-improved Grammarian, Miss "Bobby" Leivin, by a touch. Another girl at top form was Miss Jean Webster, who was too good for the men in the 100 yds breast6troke final in 1.25 2-5. I The largest number of competitors for years lined up for the Auckland provincial diving championship (one running and. one standing dive), there being a competitor eaph from Te Puke and Hawera. The judges were unable to .separate three girls, and in re-diving the title went to Miss Bebe Cooke. It was a splendid contest in every way, and the form generally was so good that the previous holder, Miss Jean Thomson (University) could not qualify. The four relay races were immensely popular, the medley in particular being hailed with enthusiasm. In this Grammar turned the tables on the fine Ponsonby side, which had proved victorious in the inter-club teams' swim. Secretary Tom Stotter can take credit for his splendid organisation of an outstanding carnival. Others who got through a great amount of work were starter Len Brighton, announcers C. Jenkinson and W. S. Wilson, and result steward Geo, Davidson. In the results which follow, the abbreviations represent:-—W„ Waitemata; Mt. E„ Mount Eden; Par.. Frankham, will be raced. The North Shore crack beat the Mount Eden swimmer in the provincial fifty on Tuesday week, and as the latter fouled a line he is anxious for another swim witn Crump over the distance, especially as Frankham holds the New Zealand senior record for the distance.
