TROTTING.

THE CHAMPIONS.

HAROLD LOGAN ON TOP,

PREVIOUS MATCHES RECALLED. By winning the match race at Timaru on Saturday Harold Logan is now one up on Roi I'Or in their contests at a mile and a quarter. Up till Saturday the pair had met on four occasions at ten furlongs, and honours were even. The report of the race shows that Harold Logan drew the rails, that the pair raced in close company, and when the last Quarter was begun they were on terms. Then they settled down to a real race home, and, with both horses under the 'whip, Harold Logan finished three-quarters of a length in front. Previous Match Races. Trotting matches have been rare, in the test thirty years, and the only three of major importance that come to mind are Fritz-Rihbonwood heats, the Native ChiefGreat Biligen meeting, and the two-year-old trotters' " Challenge Stakes " between Koro Peter and First Wrack at Auckland. The • defeat of the famous Australian trotter Fritz by the pacer Ribbonwood is so far off that most present-day racegoers have only heard it talked of by their ciders, and it is just on five years since Native Chief beat Great Bingen. Conditions of Race. The race was run over a mile and a quarter, a distance which suited both horses. It is more or less an outcome of the Free-for-AU at Addington.in November. In that race, Roi l'Or defeated Harold Logan by a neck, after a thrilling race, in the record time of 2.38 1-5, Harold Logan being credited officially with 2.38 2-5, although actually ha did a couple of yards better. Harold Logan's previous record was 2.38 2-5, and this was done in handicaps from 60yds behind, and the official basis of 12yds per second (when he was actually doing 13% yds) made his figures illusory. It can safely be said that Harold Logan's 2.38 2-5 in the Free-for-AU was almost a second better than this time in hia handicap efforts. Series of Coincidences. There is a remarkable series of coincident circumstances surrounding the history of the two champions. The dams of both, Ivy Cole (Harold Logan) and Gold Queen (Roi l'Or) were at one time owned by Mr. J. Coffey, in the Springfield district. Ivy Cole, with a foal later to be known as Harold Logan, and Gold Queen, in foal to Rev de Oro, were then both sold to Mr. P. Brown, who took them to the Mackenzie country. Mr. Brown was thus the onetime owner of both Harold Logan and Roil' Or. Another coincidence is that each embryo champion won his first race at Waimate, Roi l'Or in harness'and Harold Logan in saddle, in the same season. Each horse began his racing career as an " upcountry " representative, Harold Logan being trained originally at Tokorahi and Roi l'Or in the Kurow district. To carry coincidence further, neither pacer had, prior to Saturday, raced at Washdy-ke, Neither Over Raced. Harold Logan now ranks as ten year 6 old, and Roi l'Or as nine, but neither has shown any diminution of brilliancy. This is explained by. the fact that Roi l'Or was well into his fifth year before he raced, and his season was a light one. Harold Logait was within a week of being rated as a six-year-old before he appeared in public. He had only one outing at five, and four at six. Since then neither horse has been over-raced, and both in appearance absolutely belie their years. Up to date, Harold Logan has raced fifty-two times in six seasons, and Roi l'Or has faced the barrier forty-seven times in the same period. A summary of their performances sho-ws the following:— Ist. 2nd. 3rd. Unp. Harold Logan 19 5 6 22 £8700 Roi l'Or 14 9 4 20 £5700

As the next attraction locally to trotting enthusiasts is the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on February 18 and 22 there is little or nothing doing at Epsom in the way of fast work, and steady jogging is the order with most trainers. Horses who have been enjoying a short respite since the Cup meeting are again regular attendants, and another week should see them being sent along in earnest. The programme drawn up for the February meeting is somewhat similar to the summer meeting in classes, and, as nominations do not close till February 3, owners have' plenty of time to consider their plans.
