SAP IN POWER POLES.

PROBLEM OF REPLACEMENT. A question that often crops tip at electric power board meetings is sap in hardwood power poles. After a certain length of time the sapwood decays and leaves only the heart. The operation of decay generally begins at the ground line, and it can be.seen anywhere round the Auckland district. At the meeting of the Waitemata Electric Power Board this morning authority was given to replace four decayed poles on the Riverhead line. In answer to a question from a member the manager, Mr. A. Main, said a comprehensive report on the matter of decay in the sapwood of all poles in the board's area was being prepared. The chairman, Mr. W. R. T. Leigh ton, said in one instance the decay of the sapwood had left a pole with only four inches of heart to hold up the wires. He gave an assurance that the matter was being closely watched, and said there need be 110 fear of danger from poles collapsing.
