N.Z. TENNIS TITLES.

ANGAS IS DEFEATED. ANDREWS AND MALFROY MEET. MISS MA CFARL Als E IN FIXAL. (By Tclcsmipli.—l'ress Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. In fine weather, but with a disconcerting cross-court wind from the north-west, tha New Zealand tennis championships were continued to-day. The finals were reached in the adult events and finals were played in some of the junior events. The tourney will conclude on Monday. • Wellington has retained the Nunneley Casket as the result of winning a set to-day' from Canterbury in a doubles match.

The outstanding features of to-day's play were 'the defeat of C. Angas, holder of the men's singles title, Mrs. i Dykes (four times champion) by Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, and N. R. C. Wilson and A, 0. Stedman, holders of the men's doubles title. Both semi-finals in the "woman's singles were disappointing affairs. Miss Dulci< Nicholls scarcely left the base line to de feat Miss Doris Howe, who could not copt with the winner's fast driving and severely chopped balls. Mrs. Dykes started aggressively against Miss Mar jorie Macfarlane, and by storm ing the net repeatedly gained a 5 —4 lead She then faded right out of the picture frequently double-faulting and outing easj balls, and the Auckland woman, quick tc seize her opportunity, clapped on th< pace to win seven games in a row anc lead 7—5, s—o.5 —0. Mrs. Dykes then took thi sixth game with a bright burst, but tin Remuera lady never let up, and won easib at 6—l. Malfroy annihilated Barnett, who triec all he knew to get past his more experi enced opponent. Malfroy served, smashed drove and volleyed so brilliantly tha Stedman's conqueror looked like a school boy. Angas was favourite when lie steppec out against Andrews, and even at set-al many thought lie looked a winner, bu: Andrews always seemed to have something in reserve, and by brilliant backhanc driving and fierce serving he forced tin holder into many errors to run out a gooc winner at 6 —2 in the fifth set. A verj wide range of strokes was brilliantly ex ploited in this game, and some marvellous recoveries and passing shots delighted the large gallery. Angas was played to c frazzle. France brothers scored a spectacular wir against Wilson and Stedman in five sets : the losers having no fewer than eiglii match points in the fourth and fifth sets Stedman missed three sitters, and had his overhead been better the holders would still be defending their title. Wilson was brilliant overhead, but the Frances, standing well back, returned their opponents' smashes down the centre of the court will: monotonous regularity until their mora] broke. Malfroy and Seay were too clever fr.i Andrews and Lowry, whom they defeated in straight sets. Results:— MEN'S SINGLES. Semi-finals. —C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) beat H. A.
