RIDER SUSPENDED.

L. J. ELLIS PENALISED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Saturday. Following an inquiry into La Poupee's fall during the running of the January Handicap at Trentham to-day, L. J. Ellis, rider of Hula Belle, was suspended for 14 days for crossing. Regret was expressed 'by the stewards that R. Reed, one of the most experienced riders in the race, was unable to assist by giving any useful evidence as to his observations connected with the incident. The stewards also held an inquiry into the riding of J. Barry on Tippling in the Anniversary Handicap on Thursday, and heard the evidence of Barry, G. Humphries, rider of Wise Choice, and F. Shaw, trainer of Tippling. The stewards said they considered the riding was unsatisfactory, and, as there was some interference, decided to give Barry the benefit of the doubt as to whether the horse was run on its merits. Barry was severely cautioned.
