BAKERY TROUBLE.

AWARD EXPIRED. NEW CONDITIONS APPLIED. PROTEST BY THE MEN. Employees in the bakehouse of the second largest bakery of Auckland refused to continue work this morning under the new conditions imposed by the master bakers. The award expired on December 11 owinrr to no agreement being reached at the conciliation proceedings and the employers drew up a new scale which, according to Mr. E. J. Watson, secretary of the Operative Bakers' Union, reduces wages of the ordinary worker by approximately 21/ weekly, in addition to altering the working conditions. "The bakery concerned," said Mr. Watson, "employs some 14 men.

Although the award expired oil December 11 an agreement was made whereby it should remain in force over the holidays. The men in this bakery, as in others, have made protest against the new scale, but ill the case of the business in question an agreement was arrived at with the manager for the old award to be paid less 5 per cent. This came into operation a week ago, but on Wednesday the men were told that they must accept the terms laid down by. the employers. The week's work finished at 8 o'clock this morning, when the men were paid off. They intimated that they would not restart under the new conditions.

"I understand, however, that the bakery will continue to operate, as some importations from Wellington have been employed in addition to some local men," said Mr. Watson. He added that an agreement much more favourable to the men than the masters proposed was being between the employers and the employees of one of Auckland's leading bread-making concerns. Trouble had not eventuated elsewhere, but the men in the different bakeries were mostly discontented and the union had arranged for a meeting to be held in the Trades Hall to-morrow evening to consider their position. Mr. Watson said that in addition to fi big cut in wages the men's annual eight-day holiday had been eliminated. In addition other privileges had been taken away.
