RUMOUR DENIED.

RECRUITS FOR CHINA. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Reports have been current in Wellington during the past few weeks that a man reputed to be a British officer has been recruiting men qualified in machinegunnery for service, in China. The rumour was that those who were being induced to offer their services in China were being guaranteed their expenses and keep. A complete denial of the rumour was given to-day by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence. The Minister also denied that military stores had been sold to Japan. "No equipment or stores of any description," lie said, "have been sold officially or Otherwise to Japan. The ouly sales made of surplus Defence stores have been to reputable New Zealand firms with whom the Department has been dealing for years."
