HIGHWAYS SUBSIDY.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NGATEA, this day. Advice was received by the Hauraki Plains County Council at its meeting yesterday from the Main Highways Board that an additional £400 subsidy has been made available for maintenance 011 the three main nighways in the county. The amount available for expenditure under the original subsidy was £300, and the council decided "that this, together with the additional subsidy, should be allocated as follows: PokenoWaihi, £533; Pipiroa-Coromandel, £155; Orongo-Netherton, £70. A report from the lands drainage engineer 011 the operations by relief workers on the Miranda drainage scheme submitted to the meeting showed that the total expenditure to the end of the year was £7358, of which the county had contributed £4900. The average earnings of the men on contract were 9/8|- a day.
