ANNIVERSARY REGATTA. Possibly the extra ten per cent added to the prize money this year at the Anniversary regatta is the cause of the increased entries- especially in the small classes. It may also be due to the increasing popularity of boats under 20ft, but, whatever the cause, it is very ■ much appreciated. Last year the sailing entries totalled 138, and the power boats 51. The totals this year are over 160 sailing craft, 22 more than last year, and 56 power boats, a total increase of 30 boats. This is partly accounted for by 18 boats of the new Wakatere class, which are racing for the first time, but any increase is good at the present time. . The V class tops the list with 22, the Y boats number 19, the Wakateres 18, and the S class 15. There are 11 Z's and C's, and 12 T'e. The X class will see an old favourite again competing, Lord Jellicoc's Iron Duke, which has been secured for the season by Mr. W. T. Matthews, of Ponsonbv. Joan is not entered, while Idler will be at Lyttelton. The big boats include Ariki, Nga Toa, lorangi, Prize, Rawene and Moana. The outboards show an increase, and there are 14 speed boats, but the other classes are about as usual. When the figures were totalled at 9 o'clock last evening, the chairman of the committee, Mr. Ernest Davis, who was present, congratulated the members of the entry committee on their good work, and said the results were very encouraging..

As often happens, the big event has attracted a number .of boats that have not raced for some time, but which always come out on regatta day to the worry of the liandicappers. Several new boats will make their appearance, apart from the 18 Wakateree. One is Snipe, a loft Gin square bilge type, built by Mr. 13. Graham, late owner of Gloriana. The Snipe class is very popular in America. She will be quite modern in appearance with her small sails and tall oblong' mast, built up of two pieces of 4in by %in timber, and two pieces of 2in by %in timber forming an oblong-built must, 4in at sides and 3in forward and aft, tapering to 2in by lin at the head. The spar is screwed, and it is certainly lighter than an ordinary solid mast. Another boat of the Snipe class has just been completed by Speedcruft Boat Works. Aee 11. is a new 14-footer, entered in the T class. She has been built by Mr. D. Brophy, of London Street, Ponsonby, and is a very good job throughout. She will also carry the Berniudan rig, with the usual tall mast and fittings. Ace should give Shalirnar a run for it. Mr. Brophy is an old yachtsman, and has owned several small craft, including the one-time crack 16ft open boat Sceptre, which was smashed to matchwood by a few tons of cliff coming down on her while in winter quarters. Goldie, a new Y boat, built by Morris Hurfitt, of Parnell, has only raced twice, at the Tamaki Club and Cowes regatta. She has the modern rig, and with her' black enamelled topsides look very smart. Kea and Koala, in the Y class, are both new boats this season.

The V class, 18ft square bilge boats (the majority are of this type) has 22 entries, and the race is sure to be keenly contested from starting to finishing gun between Paroro, Avro, Mystic, Marianne, Drone and Champagne. The power boat division will be handled in a very convenient place this year in the large area of sheltered water between the Prince's wharf and the Western wall. This will keep the power boats all on the southern side of the flagship, and it Ls proposed to keep the sailing craft to the north side of the flagship, but this will be notified officially if decided on. Everything points to a really successful regatta, giveu the favour of a fine day. The 7-footers will be sailed in the comparatively smooth wr' -r near North Head, while the model ya:.' ta, for which post entries are to be received, will compete in the Orakei Basin, under the officers of that club, assisted by handieappers from the Manukau Seniors, and Mr. P. J. Webb and Mr. R. Murphy, of the Ponsonb.y Model Club. The model yacht races to be held on Orakei Basin on Anniversary Day in conjunction with the Regatta Committee are as follows:—No. 1. general handicap race, open; No. 2. 3-footers' championship: No. 3, boys' race, under 17; No. 4, general handicap, open; No. 5, 4-footers' championship: No. 6, consolation handicap sweepstake. Entry fees are 6d in all races except for juniors, which are 3d. Post entries will be received up till 15 minutes before start of rane.
