N.Z. TENNIS TOURNEY.

NOEL WILSON BEATEN. STEDMAN AND STURT WIN. MISS MACFARLANE PROGRESSES. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, Thursday. The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were continued this morning in fine but cloudy weather, with a north wind. In the afternoon the conditions were ideal.

The outstanding defeat was that of J* oe. Wilson (a "seeded" player) by '1. IvhouesWilliams, whom the Wellingtonian nad defeated (4 —6, 7 —5, CS —4) in the W ilduig Shield on Monday. Aucklanders Going Well. The faster courts and brighter weather conditions ' that prevailed were greatly | appreciated by the leading Auckland players, who are showing splendid torm. Stedman gave a good all-round display in defeating the promising Manawatu player, Robertson, in straight sets. He and Noel Wilson (champions) have also reached the semi-final of the doubles without losing a set, and on present form should account for France brothers in their next game. Denis Coombe (Feilding), a youthful Hercules, who represented Wairarapa in the 1929 national junior championships, caused a sensation by forcing Gorman Sturt to five sets before crying enough. Sturt started aggressively, but, Coombe, showing a variety of strokes equal to that of his more experienced oppouent, held on grimly to win the first set at 9- 7, only to lose the second 6 —4 after a burst of brilliant low drving by Sturt. The third set saw Coombe again on top, his infighting at this stage being a treat to watch. The fourth, set was a grim struggle, with Sturt fullv extended to win 6—4. After a desultory fifth set, in which the game slowed down to "pat-ball," Sturt s experience prevailed, and he won 6—2, mainly on Coombe's errors. More will be heard of the loser, who later in the day scored a good win in the mixed doubles with Miss Knight. Rhodes-Williams, showing brilliant form; disposed of Noel Wilson in four sets. His driving and lobbing was particularly accurate, Wilson being unable to gam his favourite net position. The loser s play was brilliant in patches, but he was unable to cope with the Cantabrian s deadly length, driving and uncanny lobbing, and faded out in the fourth set after leading three-love. Andrews, in his game against Roussell, showed a pleasing return of the form when gained him his Wimbledon reputation. Roussell, whose serving and backhand driving Was brilliant, was a "trier all the way, whilst his handling of Andrews lunging services was masterly. Roussell, however, was beaten repeatedly by the sheer speed of the winner's heavily sliced backhand shots, and his dazzling deep forehand drives.

Malfroy and Don France are both showing brilliant form, and are to meet m the fourth round. Miss Marjoiie Macfarlane has reached the quarter-final without being seriously extended. Miss Beryl Knight's form is exceptionally good. Mrs. Dykes met with stiff opposition from the youthful Cantabriaii, Miss X. Poole, who launched a tornado of fierce forehand and backhand drives her more experehced opponent, who won 7 5, o—3' after conceding four "'set" points m the first set. Mrs. Dykes looks like ■railing her fifth .New Zealand championship on her present form. Malfroy and Seay lasted long enough to defeat Barnett and Rhodes-Williams m.the fifth set after an exciting rubber, RhodesWilliams played an outstanding game in all departments, and had Bariiett been more subdued in his attempts to intercept at the net the Southerners might have won, as Seay was a passenger most of the time, his overhead work and volleying being very feeble indeed. Mrs. Melody and Miss Dulcie Nicholls are showing splendid form in the women's doubles. Sturt and Mrs. Napier played a marathon against Mrs. Whatley and L. W. Udy, winning after a spectacular three-set go. Malfroy and Miss Marjoiie Macfarlane are playing well enough to go light through. Gunn and Joy Bisho™ have reached the junior quarter-finals. Ferkins, Robertson, Bedford aild Page— a brilliant quartet, are left in the intermediate. Page, a 17-year-old Nelsonian, who easily defeated Lees (Matata) in the intermediate, has a great future.
