NORTHERN MINERS.
CONFERENCE WITH OWNERS.
NEW AGREEMENT DISCUSSED. Negotiations were commenced this morning for a new agreement between representatives of the Northern Miners' Union and the Northern Coal Mine Owners. The current industrial agreement terminates at the end of this month, and among the new proposals of the owners, upon which most discussion is likely to take place, is the 5 per cent reduction in the case of wage workers and a 7} per cent reduction of piece workers.
The conference this morning was presided over by Mr. W. D. Holgate, president of the New Zealand Mine Owners' Association.. There were present Mr. T. O. Bishop, secretary of the association, and directors of the various companies concerned.
The miners were represented by: — Messrs. R. L. Roberts, G. Green, J. Clark, T. Stephenson, V. Curran (chairman), and W. Davison (secretary), Waikato; W. Wesley, ancl C. Latham, Hikurangi; A. McLagan, secretary of the United Miners' Union, Brunnerton.
